Meryl Swidler, an athletic trainer at Northwestern Medicine, has been a competitive kickboxer for 15 years.

In 2023, she was preparing for the World Championships when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) just nine weeks before the competition.

Northwestern Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon Aaron A. Bare, MD, performed Meryl’s surgery. For rehabilitation, she worked with Northwestern Medicine physical therapists and a sports performance trainer.

With the support of her care team, Meryl returned to competition in March; she won and qualified for Team USA!

“On my good days and bad days, my rehab team kept me on track toward new milestones as I worked to return to the ring,” says Meryl. “They adapted to my sport, and I’ve regained the confidence to compete in what I love.”

In September, Meryl represented Team USA at the North American Championships in Toronto—and won her fight! She now plans to travel to Abu Dhabi in November for the World Championships.
