I was having a conversation with someone and she asked me what I did. I told her that I was a naturopathic doctor and she said “Oh, like Herbalife?”
This wasn’t the first time that what I do was confused with network marketing.
But network marketing is very different from what I really do as a naturopathic doctor.
1. I’m a doctor. I hold my license in a state that recognizes naturopathic physicians (although I don’t live in one, yet). I have to keep current with continuing medical education. I have a naturopathic medical board that I am responsible to. If I do something that goes against the rules of this board, I can lose my license or worse.
2. I had to get an undergrad degree (Bachelors in biomedical sciences) and a 4 year post graduate naturopathic medical degree in which I actually treated patients (ordered labs, did blood draws, created treatment plans, etc) to graduate from naturopathic medical school. Then, to receive my license, I had to sit for and successfully pass 2 board exams covering everything I learned while in school: basics sciences like anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, etc and clinical sciences: differential diagnoses, pharmacology, basic radiology, botanical medicine, nutritional intervention, etc.
3. I don’t sell or recommend any certain brand of product or product line yet. (More on this exciting news to come!) I have brands that I prefer my clients to use because I trust their quality but I’m not affiliated with any one brand or product.
4. I don’t have a downline and I don’t recruit anyone to be a part of my sales team. My only focus is in improving client health with an individualized approach to whole-person centered care. This means that I’ll recommend supplements, diet changes, sleep hygiene, physical activity, etc.
These are the biggest differences between me and a network marketer. I don’t have anything against those who do network marketing but that’s not what I do.
