Douglas George Dikun, 68, of Carol Stream, IL passed away October 8, 2021, following
a short battle with leukemia while at Rush University Medical Center, surrounded by the
love of his family.
Born in Chicago on April 15 (tax day) in 1953, Doug followed his Catholic faith at a
young age and was in the seminary for 6 years as a Vincentian with time spent in
Lemont, IL, Santa Barbara, CA, and Perryville, MO. These were very formative years,
including a car accident while in Lemont that almost took his life. Luckily, he survived
and thrived, despite the odds, but had stories for everyone about his plastic head.
While working at Illinois Bell, Doug met the love of his life, Judy. They married in 1976
and bought a home in Carol Stream that they have lived in ever since, including raising
three kids there. Doug enjoyed his work in Human Resources at the phone company,
but then transitioned to Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) which was a passion
for the last twenty years. He retired about a year ago but went back as a contractor
because of how much he loved helping people.
When not working, Doug had many passions. He and his wife loved to travel, especially
to Florida a few times per year, and their timeshare was like a second home. Doug
fished regularly, looking for a spot with weeds for bass or just catching little bluegills.
He loved to take care of the neighborhood wildlife, always putting up bird and squirrel
houses, including making sure they were well-fed. If bragging about his family was
considered a hobby, Doug excelled, always talking about his kids and grandkids, who
were the lights of his life. Above all else, Doug was a man of faith and very active with
the St. Vincent DePaul Society, serving as his parish’s president for over 30 years.
Doug went out on calls regularly day-and-night to help the poor and hungry in his area,
ensuring they had a safe place to stay and food to eat.
Doug is survived by his wife of almost 45 years, Judy (Coppock); children: Christiana,
Brian (Lindsay), and Nathan (Caitlin); grandchildren: Heaven, Aubrey, and Logan.
A visitation will be held Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 4 to 8 PM at Corpus Christi
Catholic Church, 1415 West Lies Road in Carol Stream, IL. The funeral will be held
Friday, October 22, 2021, with a Catholic mass starting at 10 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at
Corpus Christi online (corpuschristicarolstream.org) or at the address above.
