Via Real PT Outpatient Orthopedic Physical Therapy in Kinesiology Exercise Science from Cal State University Long Beach.

Dr. Omar Flores, PT, DPT, CSCS received his doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA and his B.S. He is a former United States Marine Corps Sergeant and has done two tours overseas, including Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Dr. Flores specializes in myofascial release, which is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying sustai

ned pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restoring motion. The use of myofascial release allows him to immediately find the tissues that are causing the patient problems and in most cases, provide immediate relief. He has also been a personal trainer since exiting the Marines in 2006 and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and therefore specializes in developing strengthening programs for people of all ages and walks of life. Whether you’re trying to make the varsity football team, run your first 5k or simply try to get out of bed a little easier, Dr. Flores has the expertise to help meet your needs.

What does YOUR rehab look like⁉️

No, this not a WOD from your local CrossFit Box. This is a patient’s PHYSICAL THERAPY session for a knee rehab at our clinic. If you are an injured athlete who is trying to get back to your sport, a stretching session with some ice and STIM afterwards isn’t gonna cut it.

“The GOALS and PRINCIPLES of rehab and training are the same... the only difference is the starting point.”

If your rehab specialist wants to treat you with rest and passive modalities, you’re in the wrong place.

⚠️Patient Update⚠️

This is Garrett’s 5th visit in his 5th week after initially seeing me for R knee pain that he has suffered with for over 2 months.
He wasn’t able to air squat below parallel, perform any ballistic jumps or run without knee pain.
After methodical loading of his knee with heavy isometrics initially and then progressing to deeper, pain free, loaded dynamic squatting and LE strengthening, we have been able to get him to squat clean and perform ballistic jumping pain-free in only 5 weeks. Garrett’s rEMOM (rehab Every Minute on the Minute) today consisted of:

Every 4th minute for 5 rounds:
35 power jump squats
8 squat cleans
12 DB snatches

Garrett’s progress with progressive overload of injured tissues helps support the evidence that exercise is key to get an athlete back to previous levels much more effectively than rest alone.

Sport-specific rehab with soccer players, Kyle and Aly today. Kyle’s rehabbing a really gnarly ankle sprain while Ally is recovering from foot surgery 🦶
⚽️
We’re working on basic skill drills with the use of mini bands for additional glute activation for warm-up. Afterwards, I incorporated deceleration and side-shuffling/cutting drills with ball touches to get the athletes back into sport-specific movements. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve outgrown our space 😉

When you go to Daddy’s clinic, you have to put in some physical work, no matter how young you are 💪🏽

Maya’s WOD:
3 Rounds:
5 Bar Facing Burpees
5 Push-Ups
5 Air Squats

Then we did some odd object conditioning of ten 8 pound med ball tosses over bar.

We finished it up the workout with a little bit of practice.

Had a great time teaching some 4th graders about the greatest job in the world during today 🙌🏽

My favorite part was when I asked the class if they had any injuries and one kid shouted, “My dog bit me in my arm 3 years ago!!!” 😂

Do you have shin pain with running?

A probable cause for your pain could be your footwear.

In an earlier post I highlighted the importance of your footwear on your running style, mostly focusing on pronation and a lateral flare on the sole of your shoe.

Today I want to focus on the saggital plane and how the shape of your shoe can affect the forces on your lower leg and foot.

As you can see in the picture of the shoes, having a posterior heel flare can increase the plantarflexion moment force during initial contact due to the increase in distance of the heel to the axis of rotation. This is mostly true for heel strikers and not fore/mid-foot strikers due to the part of the foot that makes contact with the floor first.

With an increase in plantarflexion force, the anterior tibialis has to work MUCH harder to decelerate the foot. The muscles on the anterior shin get overworked, strained and thus inflamed, causing anterior shin pain.

Note that this isn’t always the cause of shin splints. This is just one of many. If you are experiencing pain with movement, make sure you visit your local movement professional and get that pain under control 🙌🏽🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️

Myofascial release (MFR) is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to immediately eliminate pain and restore motion.

This is a patient before and after one session of MFR. He came in with severe right-sided back pain that he’s been dealing with for 2 months. Tissue work was done on his legs, hips and back bilaterally. After the session, the patient reported a drastic decrease in back pain, restored motion, and as you could see in the picture, improved posture.

This is the part of PT that is “not as sexy” as seeing athletes doing snatches or performing 50 inch box jumps. A hands-on approach is very therapeutic, however, and is a VERY big part of what helps me get my patients moving again 🙌🏽

Research has shown that the FIFA 11+ program has shown to reduce injuries in soccer players by 35-45% and severity of injuries by 20-30% ⚽️

I’m applying a big portion of this injury prevention program (with my own little twists) with the team. The program includes a series of running, strength, balance and plyometric drills that focus on proper body mechanics and core/hip strengthening ⛹🏽‍♂️ 🏀

Movement assessments were done at the beginning of the program and they will be re-assessed at the end. Data will also be taken on rate of injuries 📈

Proactive programs like these are relatively inexpensive compared to
reactive medicine, especially when surgery is involved after a severe injury

Here’s a cool exercise progression that you can use with your patients if you’re looking for something functional. I call it the “Kettlebell Ladder.”
I’m implementing programming from (i.e. deadlift/clean and jerk ladder) and incorporating it into the clinic with the average population who needs to get stronger 💪🏽
This exercise gets the patient off of the treatment table and doing functional, everyday activities with proper hip, knee, and spine mechanics.
With 66 year-old, Mona, we started with 10 lbs and went up all the way to 30 lbs in 5 lb increments.
Give it a try or make sure you visit your local ClinicalAthlete provider who can get you moving better!
