Fred and Mystel Shiney Jr. of Arcadia celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on March 16th with a dozen red roses and a lifetime of memories. Tracey Toms, an RN who joined Gentiva Hospice during the COVID pandemic, saw the anniversary announcement on Fred’s door at Journey Senior Services. In the true spirit of Gentiva’s mission of “making the most of every moment”, Tracey orchestrated the celebration, bought the dozen red roses and arranged all the details. Fred’s eyes were locked on Mystel, and tears fell down his cheeks as Mystel recounted the ups and downs of their life together. What a special moment. Kudos to Tracey for capturing this special moment of Fred and Mystel’s lives together. Congratulations, Fred and Mystel!

Death is hard enough, but death with pain is a constant debilitating struggle. Anyone nearing the end of life, struggling with severe pain, does not want to hold on and wait it out. They do not want to feel this way until they take their last breath. If given the opportunity to ask them what they want or need and have a voice, listen to them and respect their wishes.
