Georgia expands Medicaid coverage for new mothers, but is it enough?

Our own Megan Grilliot, MD, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist with Tanner Healthcare for Women, is featured in this WAGA Fox 5 Atlanta report on Georgia's efforts to expand care for people after a delivery.

Georgia expands Medicaid coverage for new mothers, but is it enough? Facing one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the US, Georgia lawmakers expanded Medicare coverage for new moms, from 6 months to a 12 months after they deliver. One obstetrician says the 6 months of extra health coverage is a step in the right direction, but it is not enough.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death among American women. It's especially dangerous because symptoms often don't occur until a later stage of the disease. That's why only about 20% of ovarian cancers are found early. Speak to your women's health provider about your risk, screenings and the symptoms to watch for. Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton was recently named on Newsweek's list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals.

Newsweek partnered with The Leapfrog Group to compile the list of hospitals that demonstrate excellence in maternity care. To be considered for the list, hospitals had to demonstrate they meet Leapfrog's standards for excellence in maternity care: low rates of C-section, episiotomy and early elective deliveries, and follow important protocols to protect moms and babies.
