Caregiving Challenge, 11 of 11

Few topics are as difficult for families as talking about the end of life. Yet planning ahead—discussing wishes, values, and practical arrangements—can be one of the greatest gifts caregivers and their loved ones give each other. Without these conversations, decisions often fall to caregivers in moments of crisis, weighed down by uncertainty, guilt, or conflict among family members.

End-of-life and future planning is not only about medical directives. It includes financial planning, funeral arrangements, and conversations about what kind of care is acceptable—and what is not. These discussions can feel painful, but they can also bring peace, ensuring that choices align with the loved one’s values and that caregivers are not left to guess.

A Reflection on Hebrews 12:15

As mentioned in an earlier post, several sisters in Christ and I are learning from God's Word about faith, discipleship, and endurance. In our discussion today, I shared my thoughts on Hebrews 12:15, a verse that has spoken to me many times in my life. They asked that I share this reflection. How Hebrews 1–11 Leads Into Chapter 12 A brief recap of Hebrews 1–11....

Meditation on Faith, Hope, Despair, and Loss

Loss comes into our lives the way a tornado storm crosses a quiet field. One moment the air is still; the next, doors are blown open and the room you thought you understood is no longer the same. I have stood in that room more than once—barefoot, disoriented, unsure where east might be. Loss does that. It shifts the ground beneath us until even simple directions feel foreign....

Hebrews 1-11 Summary

Recently, I joined a group of women who love reading and learning about God's Word as much as I do. They were well into Hebrews by the time I joined so I felt the need to catch up by reading and summarizing the first eleven chapters. It also provided my sisters a review of what they had already covered. The “WHY, WHO, and HOW” of the letter....

Caregiving Challenge, 10 of 11

Caregiving takes not only time and energy—it also takes money. The financial strain of providing care can be one of the most stressful and unspoken burdens caregivers carry. Beyond the hours of hands-on care, there are bills, insurance forms, lost wages, and the invisible costs of time taken away from work or future savings. From out-of-pocket costs for medications and equipment to reduced income from cutting back hours or leaving a job, the economic impact can be profound. Many caregivers describe the sense that they are working two jobs—one paid, one unpaid—and struggling to keep both afloat.

Caregiving Challenge, 9 of 11

Caring for a loved one often means stepping into the role of advocate, coordinator, and interpreter within a complex healthcare system. Doctors, specialists, pharmacies, insurance companies, and home health providers all become part of the caregiver’s daily reality. For many, the task of navigating this system feels like taking on a second career—without training, support, or guidance.

Caregivers juggle multiple appointments, decipher medical jargon, and translate complex terms so their loved ones and family can understand. They track ever-changing medications, ask questions their loved ones may not think to ask, fight for referrals, and monitor for errors. The stress of managing these responsibilities is immense, especially when the stakes are the health and wellbeing of someone you love.

Who was Rahab?

At a recent bible study, the question was asked: was the Rahab, mentioned in Hebrews, the same person in the genealogy of Jesus (Y'shua). So I performed a word search looking for every reference to this name. Here is the summary table with every reference for “Rahab” to determine if the Rahab of the Tanakh was the same person as in Hebrews and Jesus’ (Y’shua’s) genealogy....

Malachi: A Meditation in the Quiet Light

(with Scripture references for open-Bible reflection) Malachi’s very name means my messenger (Malachi 1:1). Whether it belonged to a single prophet or served as a mantle for a faithful voice, its ambiguity feels intentional. What matters is not the one who carried the message, but the God whose longing breathes through every verse. His prophecy stands at a threshold—a lantern lifted before the long silence that falls between Malachi and the opening cry of the Gospels....

Caregiving Challenge, 8 of 11

In the 3rd post, Balancing Multiple Roles, we saw one form of relationship strain—where family or friends feel abandoned by the caregiver. Here we look at another type of relationship strain—where the caregiver feels abandoned by others in their life. Caregiving does not just reshape the relationship with the loved one receiving care—it ripples outward, straining relationships with siblings, extended family, and friends.

These tensions are often hidden until stress brings them forward. Old family wounds may resurface, friendships may fade, and even supportive relatives can falter when faced with the long haul of care. While caregiving is often called a “family responsibility,” in practice the work frequently falls to one primary person. When support feels unequal, resentment grows, and bonds that once felt strong can begin to fray. Naming these strains and seeking healthier patterns of communication is key to preserving vital connections.

Caregiving Challenge, 7 of 11

Caregiving reshapes relationships in ways that few anticipate. For many families, the balance of love and duty shifts slowly, almost imperceptibly, until one day the change is undeniable. A partnership built on affection, shared responsibilities, and companionship can begin to feel more like a hierarchy: one person providing care, the other receiving it.

Daily routines—once lighthearted or ordinary—can be overtaken by medical needs, scheduling, and vigilance. Conversations narrow to checklists. Touch that once carried comfort and intimacy may now be tied to bathing, dressing, or medication. Love remains, but it is often buried beneath duty and fatigue.
