November 18-24 is U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW). Antibiotics are effective in treating bacterial infections, however, they are not useful against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. It is essential to enhance the proper use of antibiotics by following prescription instructions and completing the entire treatment course, as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) arises when microbes gain the capacity to overcome medications, resulting in heightened difficulty in treating infections. Using antibiotics and anti-fungals only when absolutely needed plays a key role in fighting AMR, minimizing adverse reactions, and preserving the effectiveness of these vital drugs for future use.
