As the temperature drops, respiratory syncytial virus — or RSV — begins to circulate more widely, especially among young children. Symptoms include fever, severe cough, rapid breathing and wheezing.
RSV can affect anyone, but newborns and young infants are most susceptible. Thankfully, there are two main options for preventing RSV that have been approved by the FDA:
• Vaccines for pregnant people to prevent RSV in their newborns
• An antibody product to protect babies birth through 18 months
You can also prevent RSV through the following lifestyle habits:
• Washing your hands often with soap and water
• Covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• Limiting contact with people who are sick
• Regularly cleaning toys and high-touch surfaces
• Ensuring kids do not share food and drink
Most cases of RSV go away on their own in one or two weeks with at-home treatment, but more severe cases may require medical attention. If your little one is exhibiting symptoms of RSV, stop by Tanner Urgent Care for Kids for convenient, compassionate care.
