A familiar face at the SIH Breast Center in Carbondale now has a lot more free time. Mammography tech Lynn Flanagan has spent 35 years at SIH serving patients from all across Southern Illinois.

You might still see her from time to time. Even though she's "retiring" Lynn will still pick up some shifts from time to time at the Breast Center.

SURGEON SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Suven Shankar is our latest robotic surgeon to be featured on a billboard along Route 13 in Marion!

Dr. Shankar is dedicated to using the latest robotic technology to help his patients.

MENTORING MEDICAL STUDENTS: Drs. Omore and Riggs-Carter recently had the chance to help inspire SIU Medical Students and discuss advances in ongology.

Around 60 medical students took part in a career exploration event last week in Carbondale. Dozens of physicians shared advice and details about their specialties during the event.

LEAN ON US: After receiving a cancer diagnosis, this is the time when you will depend on your friends and family for support. But you can also depend on us. We know that medical visits and treatments can be rigorous and stressful, so we do whatever we can to schedule appointments that fit into your busy lifestyle.

A cancer diagnosis can be found in a variety of ways, but it’s often found during regular tests or screenings that have been ordered by your primary care physician. Once a suspicious abnormality is found, your doctor will likely refer you to an SIH hematologist or oncologist for additional tests and an official diagnosis.

If you or a loved one is starting cancer treatment, talk to your doctor/cancer team about your chances of having side effects. The team will watch you closely and ask if you notice any problems. If you do have side effects or other problems, your doctor or nurse will help you figure out ways to manage them.

BE PROACTIVE: We want you to be proactive about taking care of yourself. We encourage you to make an appointment with one of our primary care physicians and schedule regular check-ups.

Your primary care physician will help guide you on recommended screenings, along with discussing your family medical history.

MEET CRYSTAL: Crystal has been a dedicated SIH employee for 30 years, bringing a diverse clinical background that includes Medical-Surgical, Pediatrics and more than 22 years in Labor and Delivery.

For nearly five years, she has served as a Nurse Navigator at the SIH Cancer Institute, primarily supporting gynecological, skin and hematology patients.
