When you’ve met one person with Autism, you’ve met just one person with Autism!

Children and adults with autism are very diverse.

Some people with autism talk a lot, make a lot of eye contact and prefer social situations, while some people have speech difficulties, avoid eye contact, and are more introverted. Autism is one word attempting to describe millions of different stories — let’s focus on celebrating these differences! 💙

Functional Communication Training (FCT) is used often in ABA therapy. It aims to replace challenging behavior that negatively affects children or other people with new ways of communicating. The therapy might focus on vocal communication, or it might include signing (ASL), pictures or speech generating devices.

For example, a child might want a toy but can’t ask for it. Each time the caregiver attempts to give them a toy they do not want (because the caregiver has no clue what the child wants), the child screams and throws the item. In FCT, the child would learn how to ask for the toy specifically and to say “no” or “yes” without having to scream and throw the items. The child could be taught the language (words) for the item, taught to use pictures or taught to press the corresponding button on the speech device to request the desired item.
