We are sending a big, belated happy 80th birthday wish to Dr. Mirza Ashraf, cardiologist at Carthage Area Hospital, who celebrated his birthday on November 21.

Dr. Ashraf first joined the Carthage Area Hospital Medical Staff in 1973 and has spent more than fifty years caring for the hearts of our community. Patients know him for his warmth and reassuring confidence. Colleagues know him as a dedicated physician, a teacher, and a storyteller who brings energy to every hallway he walks down.

Here is to Dr. Ashraf at 80, still caring, still teaching, and still loving celebrations. If you have a favorite memory or kind word to share, drop it in the comments and help show him how much he means to Carthage Area Hospital, North Star Health Alliance, and the North Country. 💓

Feel Good Friday spotlight! 🐾🐾

Meet Charlie, our 3-year-old Golden Retriever therapy dog at Carthage Area Hospital's Philadelphia Medical Center, working in our Physical Therapy Department. Charlie is a certified therapy dog with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and works alongside her skilled handler, Alexis Shippee, PT, DPT.

During certain physical therapy sessions, patients can take part in animal-assisted therapy with Charlie. Spending time petting, cuddling, or simply relaxing with her can help ease anxiety in the clinic, support relaxation, lift mood, and encourage emotional regulation during and after the visit.

Charlie also helps boost participation and motivation, especially for patients who may feel nervous about therapy.

Charlie is used only in the Physical Therapy Department at our Philadelphia Medical Center and only when appropriate, as determined by Alexis and the care team. We are so grateful for this furry teammate who helps our patients feel a little more comfortable, one wag at a time.

Every mile matters when you live in the North Country. 💚

Today, on National Rural Health Day, we celebrate the Power of Rural and the people who keep care close to home.

At North Star Health Alliance, our hospitals, practices, and clinics are rooted in the same small towns and villages we serve. We uniquely understand what rural healthcare really looks like:

• Long drives for appointments
• Weather and transportation that can get in the way
• Fewer providers and higher rates of chronic illness in our communities

That is precisely why we are so committed to keeping healthcare local. By working together across our campuses and practices, we strive to:

• Expand access close to home
• Strengthen local care teams
• Connect patients with the proper care at the right time

To our rural healthcare teams and community partners: thank you for showing up, day after day, for our neighbors. You are the heart of local healthcare. 💙
