Why we like our balancer bulls;
These 3 mature bulls came from different farms. They have never seen each other until 1:00 pm yesterday. This morning, no chaos, no noise, no trouble, just happy to have a little hay.

We have a lot happening on sale day. Don’t miss our seminar “From Farm to Fork and Everything in Between.” We will have a panel discussion looking at the butcher beef business; the challenges faced and success stories from a few that have really grown their business.

Jackslab Custom Meats is owned and operated by Brent Crabtree and Adam Skaggs . They purchased an existing butcher shop in 2024 with goal of revamping the business, offering custom butchery of all species, increasing its retail offering and providing both custom and state inspected services. M5 Family Farms Inc. has used Jackslab for the majority of its animals. Adam and Brent are always willing to look at different options, give us feedback, and work with us when the schedule is tight. If you have questions about starting a butcher shop, the process of butchering your animal, or questions you should ask your own butcher, this will be a great opportunity to learn

See you tomorrow morning at 10:30

Spegal's Prime Cuts is a local bucther shop, retail store, and restaurant owned by Gregg and Amy Spegal in Shelbyville, IN. The Spegal’s have been long time red poll breeders focusing on carcass quality and grass efficiency and selling beef off the farm and at farmer’s markets. They decided to take this a step further and open their own butcher shop where they provide fresh cuts from their own beef herd along with with marketing other locally raised meat products. Since opening they have added products to their offering along with daily lunch specials and monthly dinners.

Gregg and Amy have all kinds of experience from dealing directly with customers ordering bulk beef, to managing inventories while running a meat counter and restaurant, to managing employees inside a butcher beef business.

Family Traditions Beef is owned and operated by Don and Jennifer Shoemaker. They are a diverse row crop, cow, heifer developer, and backgrounder operation in Vilonia, Indiana. Located on sandy soil, the farm has always fed cattle. Jennifer runs the beef business shipping beef across the country, keeping retail cuts inventories, developing bundle and subscription packages for customers, and writing a journal “Behind the Beef”

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Don and Jennifer for several years and they have very unique perspective on the ag and beef industry and are always willing to try new things

Whether you’re selling butcher beef, looking to start, or interested finding a farm to buy from, there will be great opportunity to learn.

Our Story

M5 Ag Services, LLC. is a family owned & operated cattle and row crop operation located in central Indiana. We grow corn, soybeans, and wheat but our passion has always been in the cattle industry. Over the years, our cattle numbers have grown, always placing an emphasis on efficiency and productivity. We make every effort to select cattle that match our environment. To us that means, a moderate frame, moderate milk production, and superior growth. This has led us to use gelbvieh, angus, and red angus influenced cows. We utilize rotational pastures, stockpiled forages, and corn stalks. We also put up hay and corn silage and purchase co-products for winter feeding. We expect our cattle to work for us and not the other way around. Cows are expected to calve with ease, breed back early, and wean off heavy calves. We also place a heavy emphasis on docility. Any animal that does not meet these requirements is culled out of the herd. We aim for cows to remain profitable in our herd for a long time. It’s common for our cows to last into their late teens.

Our lead cattle expert graduated with an animal science degree from Oklahoma State University. He then received a Master's degree in Ruminant Nutrition from Purdue University. He currently works for Great Plains Livestock Consulting Inc, traveling the Midwest working with feed mills and cattle operations. Through GPLC he offers independent nutrition and herd management consulting.

We also specialize in Heifer and Bull development programs. We bring in roughly 40-50 bulls every year, selected from over 800 cows across the Midwest. Our goal is to produce efficient and profitable breeding stock that last for several years wherever they go. We back these bulls with lifetime guarantees on docility and soundness.

We also offer feeder calves for sale and freezer beef. Feel free to contact us or stop by and visit any time.
