There are a lot of hidden costs in developing replacement females. As a commercial producer it’s important to balance the hidden costs of heifer production with the cost of buying bred females.

If you’re in the market for bred females be sure to mark your Calendar for November 8th. Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants will be offering 30 head of fall and spring bred replacement females. These animals come from the top end of our registered and commercial herds. We will be selling a select group of 4-6 year old bred cows also.

One advantage of fall calving. Calves tend to come a week to 10 days early with lighter birth weights. When breeding our fall heifers we are able to use bulls with lower CED scores with no trouble.

Calves will be smaller due to the blood flow being kept near the extremities to keep the cow cooler in fall calving cows. Genetic heritability of BW only counts for about 45% with the remaining 55% being caused by environmental conditions.

📈 Where are we on the curve?
Every industry from smartphones to seed corn follows the same pattern when it comes to adopting new technology. Innovators and early adopters lead, followed by the majority and eventually the right side of the curve.
🐂In the beef industry, we’re 16 years into genomics and they’ve really proven their value the last 7 allowing for precision mating, complementary sire selection, greater uniformity, and unprecedented genetic progress.
🐃Now genomics are at a price point and application of information (RightBull & RightChoice) where commercial producers are testing at rates we haven't previously seen.
🧬The good news? Even if you’re just getting started, there’s still time to catch up but you have to take that first step. If you’re ready to bring genomics into your herd, we can help you find a plan that works toward your goals.
✅ Don’t let hesitation hold you back. The curve is moving, it’s your choice whether to move with it.

Did you know ruminants (like cattle) lay down to digest their feed more efficiently? In other words, happy cows are lying down! You can see pens full of content cattle lying down, digesting in the sunshine after feed trucks have delivered their first round of feed.

Our Story

M5 Ag Services, LLC. is a family owned & operated cattle and row crop operation located in central Indiana. We grow corn, soybeans, and wheat but our passion has always been in the cattle industry. Over the years, our cattle numbers have grown, always placing an emphasis on efficiency and productivity. We make every effort to select cattle that match our environment. To us that means, a moderate frame, moderate milk production, and superior growth. This has led us to use gelbvieh, angus, and red angus influenced cows. We utilize rotational pastures, stockpiled forages, and corn stalks. We also put up hay and corn silage and purchase co-products for winter feeding. We expect our cattle to work for us and not the other way around. Cows are expected to calve with ease, breed back early, and wean off heavy calves. We also place a heavy emphasis on docility. Any animal that does not meet these requirements is culled out of the herd. We aim for cows to remain profitable in our herd for a long time. It’s common for our cows to last into their late teens.

Our lead cattle expert graduated with an animal science degree from Oklahoma State University. He then received a Master's degree in Ruminant Nutrition from Purdue University. He currently works for Great Plains Livestock Consulting Inc, traveling the Midwest working with feed mills and cattle operations. Through GPLC he offers independent nutrition and herd management consulting.

We also specialize in Heifer and Bull development programs. We bring in roughly 40-50 bulls every year, selected from over 800 cows across the Midwest. Our goal is to produce efficient and profitable breeding stock that last for several years wherever they go. We back these bulls with lifetime guarantees on docility and soundness.

We also offer feeder calves for sale and freezer beef. Feel free to contact us or stop by and visit any time.
