We are continuing to spotlight and recognize our amazing team of nurses, and today we are highlighting Carolyn Whitehouse! 💚

Carolyn has 31 years in healthcare and works as an RN at Hickory Grove. She shared that her favorite thing about working here is being with the residents - they are great.

Outside of work, Carolyn enjoys crocheting, doing puzzles, and playing piano. She chose nursing because of her love for helping and caring for people.

When asked how coworkers would describe her, Carolyn said they would say “hard-working.”

Her advice to others going into nursing: Always make the patient or resident your first priority. Care is more than just meds or treatments- it’s about the whole person: physical, mental, and spiritual. Find your niche, if you don’t like your job, there are plenty of options. Switch to an area you love to be in.

Thank you, Carolyn, for always being so thorough and detail oriented in all that you do. We appreciate the support you provide to our team and residents and are thankful for the care, consistency, and willingness to always step in and help when you’re here. 💚

We are continuing to spotlight and recognize our amazing team of nurses, and today we are highlighting our Assistant Director of Nursing, Jackie Orr! 💚

Jackie has 39 years in healthcare, including 34 years as an RN. She shared that her favorite thing about working at Hickory Grove is helping our elders obtain their best degree of care both physically and emotionally. She believes they deserve the best treatment and that they are still giving back to others.

Outside of work, Jackie enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband in their now empty nest, visiting family as much as possible, watching sports (especially football - Go Bills🏈!), and even bird watching outside her home.

Jackie shared that nursing truly chose her. Nearly her entire family is in healthcare, and she said it has always been in her genes. She even found old stories and drawings from kindergarten about her “future job as a nurse,” ending with the words, “I just can’t wait to be a nurse. Can you?”

When Jackie asked coworkers how they would describe her, the responses included selfless, compassionate, dependable, knowledgeable, supportive, resilient, and spirited.

Her advice to others going into nursing: You are embarking on an adventure that you cannot even imagine. Don’t be afraid to take roads you never thought about. Do your job for the patient and never for yourself. Don’t do it for awards or recognition, do it to save a life, catch an error, report an abnormal finding, and pay attention. Know what you don’t know, ask questions, and double check the answers. The best nurses are the ones working hard in the background and remaining nameless, but knowing they made a difference.

Thank you, Jackie, for your leadership, support, and dedication to both our team and our residents. Your compassion and steady presence do not go unnoticed, and we are so thankful for everything you do each day at Hickory Grove. 💚

Although Nurses Week has come to an end and we may be a little overdue, we are continuing our nurse spotlights because our nurses deserve to be recognized not just for one week, but all year long! Today we are highlighting Florine Dixon! 💚

Florine has 54 years in healthcare. She was a nurse aide while going to nursing school and worked most of her career in the hospital nursing, with the last 6 years at Hickory Grove. She shared that her favorite thing about working at Hancock Village is that taking care of the residents is like taking care of her grandparents all over again, a great reward.

Outside of work, Florine enjoys spending time attending activities with her grandkids, antiquing, and gardening flower beds. She shared that she always wanted to be either a teacher or a nurse, and chose nursing because she could become a nurse with only 2 years of education and eventually teach nursing. She said she was happy as a hospital nurse and never changed paths to teach nursing.

When asked how coworkers would describe her, Florine said they would say “patient.”

Her advice to others going into nursing: All the effort will be worth the rewards. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated and you will excel in this profession.

Thank you, Florine, for all you do. Your knowledge, support and dedication does not go unnoticed. We truly appreciate all you do for our residents. 💚
