Some lessons stick with you long after the moment has passed. They show up in persistence, partnership and presence in the community you love.

JOPLIN, Mo. (KMIZ) Friday marks 15 years since a deadly, rain-wrapped tornado plowed into the city of Joplin, killing 161 people and leveling hundreds of homes and businesses. The tornado touched down shortly after 5:30 p.m. as many people were out doing their weekend shopping, or attending Joplin H...

Don't forget to come and see us tomorrow night!

Being part of a community means helping our neighbors get, and hopefully stay, healthy. Next week, the new Carthage Community Health Coalition will host a Cinco de Mayo health event at the Kolpin Family Pavilion, the location of the Carthage Farmers Market (122 Grant Street)!

This free, family-friendly event will offer health screenings, education, resources and activities for the community, with Spanish language support available. We hope anyone with health questions or issues joins us from 3 to 6 p.m. next Tuesday!

Last week, the chapter of Women With a Mission celebrated its 10th annual membership luncheon to celebrate and thank all of our members for their support over the years. This year, $120,000 was raised and spread around our various campuses for countless upgrades and investments, from EKG machines to fetal monitors and ultrasound machines.

Thanks to these women's dedication and selflessness, we were also able to celebrate having reached the milestone of nearly $800,000 allocated across 42 projects over the past decade. We thank each and every woman who has been a part of this incredible work to help us take care of our patients.

For we reflect on the Sisters of Mercy’s fourth vow, the vow of service. Service isn’t just something we do, it’s who we are. Rooted in faith and compassion, we seek to put the needs of others first, letting our actions be a light to those we serve. When service is lived intentionally, it becomes a powerful expression of mercy that can truly transform lives.

"Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:15-16

There’s no overnight path to 26.2 miles. For Dr. Jarin Redman, a hospitalist at running began during the pandemic as a way to stay healthy and manage stress during an especially demanding time. What started as a personal commitment grew into months of training, perseverance and dedication.

Staying active looks different for everyone but this path ended up leading him to proudly take part in the 130th Boston Marathon!

Amanda was healthy, a non-smoker and just looking for answers about a persistent fever. She never imagined it would lead to a lung cancer diagnosis, but thanks to Dr. Jason McKenney and the rest of the team, Amanda is still here with her family today.

Over 13,000 hours.

That’s how long Shirley Waterman has volunteered at Mercy Southeast.
Shirley, now 87 and still going strong, began volunteering in 1978 after her husband suffered a heart attack. Seeing the comfort volunteers provided to families, she thought, “I can do that!” and she did.

Her favorite place to serve is the surgical waiting room.
“The people needed someone because they were there for family members,” Waterman said. “Some were very upset, and sometimes just talking with them or offering a cup of coffee made a difference. They really appreciated it, and I felt the hours I spent there were very rewarding.”

Shirley is just one of the many incredible volunteers we’re blessed to have.

Happy to Shirley and to everyone who gives their time to serve with us!

This week, Dr. Lawrence Andrade weighed in on the health risks of energy drinks in teens. To sum it up, whatever the short-term benefits might be, you're pretty much always better off opting for water or a sports drink.

Dr. Andrade says teens who consume energy drinks can experience side effects such as increased heart rate, insomnia, jitters, and even anxiety.

In "OB deserts," mothers don't have access to pregnancy, post-pregnancy and mental health care in their community and may have to drive hours to reach that care. is working with community organizations to disrupt that norm. Through the Building Blocks program, caregivers can reach those OB deserts and help ensure that moms’ and babies’ health and daily living needs are met in the comfort of their own homes.

This is just the start of the care these families can receive:

As part of the Missouri Hospital Association’s Hospital Benefit and Public Trust Campaign, a new story featuring Mercy Southeast’s Building Blocks partnership was released. Through the no-cost program, each mother is partnered with a registered nurse early in her pregnancy and receives ongoing h...

ICYMI last week, our friends at Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States celebrated 40,000 nights stayed by families with children hospitalized in Joplin since the first one, all the way back in 1998. That adds up to more than 100 years of time families have gotten to spend together in their toughest times. RMH Joplin also operates the family room at , where families can step away from the hospital setting, do laundry, enjoy a hot shower, meals and more.

We congratulate and appreciate everyone who has made all of that possible for nearly three decades. ❤️💛

For Crystal Baker, of Joplin, her stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Joplin on Aug. 20, 1998, was also the first night anyone stayed at the house at the
