This week is Non-Binary Awareness Week!
💜💛🖤

Non-Binary Awareness Week was first launched in 2020, and was designed to surround Non-Binary People’s Day on July 14th. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness about non-binary people and the issues they face. This includes making sure that non-binary people’s experiences and identities are recognized, respected, and included in conversations regarding gender identity and expression. The primary goal of Non-Binary Awareness Week is to provide education, encourage dialogue, and ultimately to create a more inclusive and understanding world for non-binary people.

The week was created in direct response to the lack of recognition and understanding of non-binary people. This lack of recognition is often due to the limited visibility of non-binary people in media, public discourse, and our overall society.

Non-Binary Awareness Week is an opportunity to celebrate the existence and identities of non-binary people while also engaging in meaningful conversations about creating real and lasting change.

Non-binary people can also have any gender expression, with varying levels of masculinity, femininity, androgyny, or any combination of these. Non-binary gender is an umbrella term that can encompass a variety of gender identities, expressions, and experiences.

Non-binary people are often misunderstood and marginalized, and are still fighting for legal recognition in many countries. However, non-binary people have begun to gain visibility in recent years, and there is greater acceptance and understanding of non-binary gender identities.

Let’s celebrate our non-binary family, friends, and community! 🥳.

It’s International Drag Day! 🪩

Drag performers are the storytellers, oath-keepers, and sacred souls of our community. They tell stories sometimes words cannot, and bring laughter and joy wherever they go. Drag is a powerful and difficult art, one that our community deeply cherishes.

Drag performers have been deeply and unfairly targeted in recent years as the epicenter of a culture war aimed at distracting us all from the deeply ingrained challenges in our society we all struggle with. We owe them so much and they deserve so much better.

Drop some love below if a drag performer has ever made your day even a little bit better! ❤️⬇️

Yesterday on International Nonbinary People’s Day, we said goodbye to an incredible nonbinary poet, Andrea Gibson. 🕊️

Andrea’s words touched immense ranks of q***r and trans* folks all over the world, and also beyond the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Andrea spoke about gender and q***r lived experiences in ways that many haven’t yet been able to. If you haven’t had the chance to read any of Andrea’s amazing work, we encourage you to check it out and take some time to soak it in.

Andrea once said “live a more genderful life”. ❤️ Thank you for existing, and thank you for sharing your immense gifts.

As we wrap up Pride Month for 2025, we are so grateful to all those out there who have donated to incredible organizations, brought awareness to important and critical issues our community faces, and expressed their joy! We were able to donate $500 to both and today, and further their missions that are critical to our community. We couldn’t have done it without you ❤️ We will keep doing this work to support these and other critical organizations and our community at large long beyond this month, and we hope you continue to do the same.

Like so many others, we are devastated by the recent SCOTUS decision on US vs. Skrmetti, and the termination of the 988 su***de support hotline specialized for LGBTQIA+ youth.

For over 10 years, we have supported and stood by trans* youth and adults in their journey towards wellness, equality, and dignity. We have studied the science, listened to trans stories and trans individuals, and helped them in making sometimes complicated and necessary choices in a world that deeply misunderstands them and unfairly oppresses them, simply because of who they are. To have the highest court in our land disregard the accurate, well-studied, and current data on trans healthcare and trans mental health and allow specific healthcare discrimination toward these individuals is unconscionable. If we value our children, want them to be well, and want to protect them, these actions feel counter to that in every way.

According to The Trevor Project’s 2024 Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQIA+ Young People in North Carolina, 41% seriously considered su***de in the past year, rising to 47% among trans and nonbinary youth. If you dig in deeper, this increased risk for LGBTQIA+ youth can be directly correlated to lack of support for their identity, fear of and experiences of discrimination related to their LGBTQIA+ identity, and hopelessness for their future. With decisions being made by those who are supposed to serve the needs of all our citizens, and whose paychecks are provided by all of our taxes, this should extremely alarming for all of us.

Horizons remains firmly committed to our ongoing work supporting all LGBTQIA+ individuals and relationships, including trans youth. We will continue to ensure we are prioritizing high-quality research and guidelines for care that are agreed upon by the entire medical community at large, as we always have. If you are unsure how to access or find high-quality information about trans* healthcare, backed by research, we encourage you to go to the World Professional Association for Transgender Healthcare (WPATH) as well as our chapter, USPATH.

Today, we honor Juneteenth as a moment of remembrance, resistance, and responsibility.

In our work with LGBTQIA+ individuals and their relationships, including the Black q***r and trans* lives so often pushed to the margins, we recognize that liberation is not a moment in history, but an ongoing movement.

Mental health care must be part of that movement. True wellness cannot exist without justice. Therapy is rooted in liberation.

We celebrate Black freedom today while acknowledging the deep, systemic wounds that remain. We stand in solidarity with those working toward a future where Black lives are not only free, but safe, affirmed, resourced, and thriving.

We recommit to this work:
✊🏾 Naming and challenging racism in and beyond therapy
✊🏿 Centering Black voices in healing
✊🏽 Advocating for equity in mental health access
✊🏾 Building community that honors joy and rest as resistance

There is so much work ahead. But today, we remember how far we’ve come, and who we must never leave behind.

🌈 This Pride Month at Horizons, we’re honoring our past, standing strong in the present, and protecting our future.

We carry deep gratitude for the elders who paved the way: those who risked everything so LGBTQIA2S+ people could live with more visibility, dignity, and rights. We stand in solidarity with the advocates and changemakers on today’s front lines. And we remain fiercely committed to the next generation, who need us now more than ever.

We see you. We honor you. We continue to fight for you.

📊 According to The Trevor Project’s 2024 Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People in North Carolina:
* 41% seriously considered su***de in the past year—rising to 47% among trans and nonbinary youth.
* 66% reported symptoms of anxiety, including 70% of trans and nonbinary youth.
* Over half experienced depression, and 51% wanted mental health care but couldn’t access it.
* 63% faced discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
* Nearly half considered moving out of state due to anti-LGBTQ+ politics and laws.

💔 This is the reality for far too many. And it is unacceptable.

Let’s do better - for the ancestors, the advocates, and the youth who deserve a liberated future.
