That surge of panic in traffic. The tight chest in a meeting. The exhaustion that hits when things finally get quiet. These aren’t random overreactions. Often, they are your nervous system remembering situations that once felt overwhelming, unsafe, or out of control. Even when your mind says, I’m fine, your body may still be running old data.
The nervous system learns through repetition. If you’ve spent years in high alert, people-pleasing mode, or bracing for something to go wrong, your stress response can stay switched on. This can look like irritability, tension headaches, shallow breathing, difficulty sleeping, or shutting down when demands pile up. None of that means you’re weak. It means your system has been working hard to protect you.
Therapy can help you gently retrain those signals. Together we build awareness: What triggers activation? What helps you come down? We introduce regulation skills rooted in breath, movement, co-regulation, and sensory grounding so your body can experience safety in real time, not just in theory. Over time, cues that once triggered alarm can soften, and resilience grows from the inside out.
