Late Wednesday, CMS announced new initiatives to deter criminal elements from abusing the Medicare benefit by posing as legitimate DMEPOS suppliers.

These efforts include a six-month moratorium on new DMEPOS enrollments for these seven supplier types:
Medical supply company.
Medical supply company with orthotics personnel.
Medical supply company with pedorthic personnel.
Medical supply company with prosthetics personnel.
Medical supply company with prosthetic and orthotic personnel.
Medical supply company with registered pharmacist.
Medical supply company with respiratory therapist.

The moratorium also includes new locations for existing suppliers and applies throughout the United States, including all states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The effective date of this notice is February 27, 2025.

“We appreciate CMS Administrator Oz's demonstrated commitment to preventing criminals from enrolling in the DMEPOS program,” remarked Josh Marx, CEO of Medical Service Company and Chairman of the Board for AAHomecare. "We hope to work with CMS to strengthen enrollment practices without harming patients and communities by mandating a complete halt to new enrollments for existing providers."

CMS Seeks Stakeholder Input to Strengthen Defenses Against Fraud

The announcement also notes that CMS is “looking to stakeholders to provide input, based on their experience and knowledge, on additional ways the agency can tackle fraud prevention to help inform the development of a possible future rule” under the Agency’s new Comprehensive Regulations to Uncover Suspicious Healthcare (CRUSH) initiative.

As a first step in this effort, CMS is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) on ways the Agency can strengthen defenses against Medicare fraud, seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders – including states, providers, suppliers, payers, technology companies, patient advocates, and beneficiaries. CMS suggests that a proposed rule may follow and be informed by responses to their RFI.

DMEPOS Suppliers Committed to Crush Fraud

“DMEPOS suppliers and other industry stakeholders are 100% supportive of a comprehensive approach to keep criminal elements from abusing the Medicare program,” said Tom Ryan, AAHomecare President & CEO. “The direct costs of fraud as well as the government resources expended to pursue and prosecute bad actors take away from resources that could be used to keep more Americans healthy and able to contribute to their communities.”

“Leveraging new technology to detect unusual billing patterns and better approaches to keep criminal enterprises from enrolling in the Medicare program are absolutely essential to this effort,” added Ryan. “The DMEPOS community is committed to working with the Trump Administration and CMS on lasting solutions to crush Medicare fraud once and for all.”

AAHomecare will share additional perspective on the new initiative and guidance on responding to the RFI.

AAHomecare has launched a nationwide survey to capture the real-world market impact in the disposable supplies space — including rising costs for products, shipping, and labor.

The data collected will play a critical role in ongoing advocacy efforts, helping payers and policymakers better understand the need for sustainable reimbursement rates to protect the HME infrastructure and ensure continued patient access.

We strongly encourage HME providers who supply any of the following to participate:
Ostomy supplies
Urological supplies
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)
Insulin infusion pumps
Woundcare supplies
Incontinence supplies
Enteral nutrition

Take the Survey Now: https://aahomecare.checkbox.com/disposable-supplies-market-impact-survey-26

The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, March 13, 2026. All individual company responses will remain confidential, and findings will only be shared in aggregate as part of the nationwide results.

To ensure we gather the most comprehensive data possible, we are reaching out to all association contacts — including non-members — to encourage broad participation. The stronger the response, the stronger the advocacy message on behalf of our industry.

If you have questions about the survey, please contact Stephanie Legree, Project Manager at AAHomecare, at stephaniel@aahomecare.org.
Your participation truly makes a difference.

Providers from across Tennessee gathered at the Capitol in Nashville for Legislative Day — a powerful show of unity and advocacy for our industry.

This marked the first large-scale advocacy effort in many years energized by ACMESA, proudly bringing together long-standing members alongside those who recently joined from ATHOMES. The momentum was evident throughout the day, and the engagement proved to be a tremendous success.

Throughout the day, the group attended nearly 20 legislative meetings, ensuring our industry’s voice was heard clearly and consistently. In addition to participating in those meetings, Cindy Howard (Protech Medical, LLC) dedicated hours attending both House and Senate hearings, gathering valuable insight to further strengthen our advocacy strategy moving forward.

Special thanks to AAHomecare for retaining John Goetz (Bridge Public Affairs) to work on behalf of ACMESA, AAHomecare, and the industry. John and Laura Williard (AAHomecare) expertly coordinated legislative meetings and equipped attendees with strategic, impactful talking points that resonated with lawmakers. We also extend our appreciation to Michael “Ike” Isaacson (VGM Group) for representing the supplier community and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with providers throughout the day.

The collaboration, preparation, and unified message made a strong impression — and attendees left encouraged and optimistic about the positive changes these advocacy efforts can help drive.

Participating providers and partners included: Beth Bowen (ACMESA), Laura Williard (AAHomecare), John Goetz (Bridge Public Affairs), Thom Harvill (Above & Beyond), Michael Isaacson (VGM Group), Jill Ferrell (Lincare), Bill Gutknecht (Mobilcare Medical), Charles Satterfield, PharmD (Archer’s), Janet Butler (Access DME, LLC), Becky Bell (Archer’s), Tim Havel (NSM), Ted Malkowski (Numotion), Cindy Howard (Protech Medical, LLC), Cullen Barney (Prism), Stephanie Wood (Lincare), Jonathan Kolakowski (Advanced Medical), Carrie Pitcock (Rhythm Healthcare), Lynnette Evans (Buckeye DME), and Lee Armstrong (Buckeye DME).

Today was packed with learning, connection, and appreciation across the healthcare and technology community. We kicked things off by recognizing Chris Burgess for his outstanding dedication and service as President of ACMESA over the past two years.

Attendees gained valuable insights from Wayne Van Halem of Van Halem Group, who delivered an engaging audit session, followed by John Weber from platinum sponsor Notable Systems, who shared important perspectives on AI pitfalls.

The morning also featured a breakfast vendor session and multiple networking opportunities, giving participants plenty of time to connect. We wrapped up with Johnathan Bridges, bronze sponsor Tennr, who presented on DME trends and workflow productivity.

A full day of education, collaboration, and community — thank you to all who made it such a success!
