“Compassion fatigue is a state experienced by those helping people or animals in distress; it is an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped to the degree that it can create a secondary traumatic stress for the helper.” - Dr. Charles Figley,
Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project

Have you been caregiving for a while and have started to notice yourself worn out and stressed most of the time? You may have compassion fatigue. Symptoms of compassion fatigue include being easily frustrated, irritated, and annoyed, having signs of depression, feeling ineffective, restless, negative, or inadequate. Compassion fatigue can be an unwanted consequence of working with people who are suffering. Symptoms of stress include illness, injury, perceptual stress: real or perceived; financial problems, conflict and worry.

How does the body react to stress?
Hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine, and cortisol are released into the body as it prepares for its flight-or-flight response. Stress can affect different bodies in different manners, but generally they follow a similar pattern. Effects including Increased glucose blood levels, fast heartbeat, decreased digestive functions, sleep disruptions, and increased blood pressure.

Depression + Caregiving
A report from the Family Caregiver Alliance found that 40%-70% of caregivers have symptoms of depression. That is big percentage of caregivers who are suffering because of, or at least in addition to, all of the responsibilities of taking care of loved ones.

Depressive symptoms can be varied, but most people who experience this lillness have:

Feelings of sadness that last for more than 2 weeks.
Fatigue
Inability to concentrate
Anxiety
Difficulty sleeping
Suicidal thoughts

What is mindfulness?
A moment to moment awareness of your environment, bodily sensations and mind-state-nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment.
Try to be mindful in all situations to focus on the present and not worry about what may happen next.

Self-Care
Support groups such as social networks, friends, and family can alleviate some of the heaviness that can come from caregiving. Additionally, journaling, blogging, telling your story, coloring, and working on hobbies will also help caregivers overcome some of the negative feelings and experiences they have gone through.

Other self-care tips include:
Taking stock of what is on your plate
Finding time for yourself everyday
Learning to ask for help
Having a transition from work to home
Learning to say “no” more often
Assessing your trauma inputs
Learning more about compassion fatigue and trauma
Exercising
Following a healthy diet
Getting enough sleep
Deep breathing
Meditation
Prayer
Mindfulness (Being in the Moment)
