Here is the update on Jack, the nine year old that spent five days in my office for care.

Congenital abnormalities and sixteen surgeries, left him with several significant deficits. Born with feet abnormalities, cognitive impairment and an IQ of 70; walking was the least of his challenges. Now at 9 years old, he didn’t know all the letters of the alphabet, and he could not read.

A recurring tumor in his left ear required frequent surgery to remove. When he was six, the doctors decided to remove part of Jack’s skull so that the tumor would have more room to grow and he could spread out the surgeries.

The operation went south. Some of the nerves to Jack’s face were damaged and he got a severe fungal infection that almost went into his brain and killed him. For six months Jack was put on very strong drugs that made him hallucinate daily. The muscles on the left side of his face were paralyzed, his eye staring unable to close. The right side of his face had no feeling. Jack lost most of the hearing in his left ear. The surgeons cut another hole in his head and implanted a hearing aid. The pain was terrible and ultimately his body rejected it. More surgery followed to try to correct the damage, but it did not. His sense of balance was damaged and he sould not walk straight. He could not stand on a vibration board. He could not play on most of the equipment on a playground. The neurologist at John Hopkins and several other clinics told Jack parents that the damage was permanent.

I have to tell you that Jack is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. He has a phenomenal outlook on life and the room fills with his joy when he enters.

We were able to do some very special work together. By Friday Jack could readily identify all the letters of the alphabet. He could walk straight and do a one leg squat on a vibration board. His could feel his face and close his eye. And Jack could hear a whisper.
