Big feelings often show up before we know what to call them. The “Name It to Tame It” practice is a simple but powerful way to reduce overwhelm by putting language to what you're experiencing.

Instead of saying “I feel bad,” pause and ask:
Is this frustration? Disappointment? Shame? Loneliness?

Research shows that naming an emotion actually calms the nervous system. It brings your brain online, gives you distance from the feeling, and helps you choose what to do next.

You don’t have to fix the emotion, just start by naming it.

Cultural humility isn’t about proving a point, it’s about understanding where someone’s point of view comes from. This quote reminds us that beliefs about mental health are often shaped by culture, trauma, and experience. Instead of rushing to correct, we’re invited to pause, listen, and get curious. When we do, we help create space for growth, healing, and mutual respect, essential ingredients in reducing stigma and supporting those who are struggling.

The ABC Model is a simple tool from cognitive behavioral therapy that helps you trace emotional reactions back to their roots.

A = Activating Event (what happened)
B = Belief (what you told yourself about it)
C = Consequence (how you felt or acted)

For example:
A = My friend canceled plans
B = “They don’t want to be around me.”
C = I felt rejected and withdrew

When you realize the belief is what fuels the consequence, not just the event, you gain power to question it, reframe it, and shift the outcome.

Destigmatizing mental health has been a long-standing goal for many. We’ve seen a beautiful shift over time with various trainings, podcasts, and conversations aimed at removing the shame often associated with mental health. While progress has been made, there’s still work to do. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s beneficial to consider how cultural humility can help us achieve this goal.

We all have an emotional mind and a logical mind, but there's a third space where they meet: Wise Mind.

Wise Mind is that grounded inner voice that helps you respond, not react. It acknowledges feelings but also considers facts. It’s calm, intentional, and clear.

You can tap into it by pausing and asking:
– What do I feel?
– What do I know to be true?
– What response aligns with both?

The goal isn’t to shut out emotion or lean only on logic. It’s to blend both with self-awareness and choice.

In celebration of World Mental Health Day, October 10th is a time for many people to learn, advocate, and reflect on how their own mental health is impacted by the world around them. It’s a chance for something that often feels so personal and individual to be seen through a global lens. This year in particular, with one of the key aspects of World Mental Health Day’s 2025 theme being Global Collaboration, provides the perfect opportunity to learn about how other countries approach mental health. How is mental health supported in different cultures around the world? What practices can we learn from and could we apply them to our lives too? If we did, what benefits could they have? Here are a few practices from around the world that can help us begin to answer these questions:
