The Circle of Influence
We often carry stress over things we care deeply about—but that we can’t actually change. The Circle of Influence helps shift your focus toward what is within your power.

Start by writing out your current stressors. Then divide them into:
– What I can control
– What I can influence
– What I can’t change

Let this guide your energy and time. You don’t have to stop caring. You just don’t have to carry everything. Focus on where your effort can lead to actual change. The rest can be gently released.

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially in that first session. Michael’s clients often share how quickly they felt at ease—heard, understood, and met with genuine empathy. When someone listens without judgment, it makes opening up feel possible and the work ahead feel less overwhelming.

Tolerating Distress Toolkit
Not every emotion can be solved or soothed right away. Sometimes, we just need to get through the moment. That’s where distress tolerance skills come in.

When you’re overwhelmed, try:
– Holding an ice cube
– Running cold water over your hands
– Doing jumping jacks
– Counting backwards from 100 by sevens
– Naming 5 things in the room

These aren’t long-term fixes, and they’re not meant to be. They’re lifelines to help you stay present until the wave passes.

Feeling remembered matters. When your therapist holds onto the details of your story, it creates space to slow down, feel what you’re feeling, and make sense of it all. Being allowed to fully experience your emotions, without rushing or fixing, can be incredibly healing.

There is a quiet panic that shows up for many people this time of year. A sense that everyone else has momentum while you are still catching your breath. That somehow you missed a step, fell off schedule, or failed to keep up with an invisible timeline.

The Safe Place Visualization

When the world feels chaotic or overstimulating, this practice offers a powerful inner anchor. The Safe Place Visualization helps you create a calming mental space you can return to anytime.

Imagine a place where you feel completely safe—real or imagined. Fill in the details:
What does it smell like?
What do you hear?
Who, if anyone, is there with you?

This tool helps soothe anxiety, build internal regulation, and create a sense of agency when everything else feels out of your hands.

Daily Emotion Check-In
Tuning in to how you feel might sound simple, but many of us move through the day disconnected from our emotional state.

A daily emotion check-in invites you to pause and ask:
– What am I feeling right now?
– Where do I feel it in my body?
– What might this emotion be asking for?

This practice builds emotional awareness, which is the foundation for better boundaries, clearer communication, and deeper self-understanding. You don’t have to fix the feeling—just start by noticing it.
