STOP Skill (DBT Tool)

When emotions feel like they’re taking the wheel, the STOP skill can help you regain control before reacting impulsively.

S – Stop. Literally pause whatever you’re doing.
T – Take a breath. Regulate your nervous system.
O – Observe. What are you feeling? Thinking? Noticing around you?
P – Proceed mindfully. Make a conscious choice instead of reacting automatically.

This is a moment-to-moment skill—quick, simple, and surprisingly powerful. You don’t have to change the feeling. You just don’t have to let it run the show.

The holidays can bring joy, but they can also bring pressure — pressure to have the perfect meal, host the perfect gathering, or feel constantly cheerful. But here’s the truth: you’re allowed to let go of those expectations. You don’t have to follow traditions that don’t serve you or dress up when you’d rather be in pajamas. Real peace comes when you give yourself permission to loosen the holiday ‘shoulds’ and focus instead on what genuinely brings you comfort and connection. This year, make space for joy on your own terms.

The “Should” Inventory

If you’re walking around with thoughts like “I should be over this” or “I should be doing more,” it might be time for a Should Inventory.

Here’s how it works:
1. Write down every “should” statement bouncing around in your mind.
2. Ask: Whose voice is this? Is it true? Is it kind?
3. Replace it with a reframe that reflects your actual needs and limits.

Often, we carry invisible expectations that don’t match our current season. Letting go of “should” can free you to show up with self-trust instead of shame.

Most of us know we need better boundaries — the harder part is keeping them.
You set one, feel strong for a week or two, then old habits sneak back in. Maybe guilt shows up. Maybe you doubt whether you deserve to hold that limit at all. That’s where the SMART framework comes in. It gives boundaries structure and clarity, so they don’t rely on emotion or willpower alone.
