Hello Facebook Friends,

I'm excited to share something meaningful I've been working on.
I’ve recently developed a coaching program—offered both individually and in groups—designed to help conflict-avoidant individuals build the skills to confidently manage the bullying behaviors of controlling people.
This approach is grounded in the principles of emotional integrity and the Randori philosophy from Aikido—offering people a way to protect their peace without sacrificing their kindness or compassion.

🎙️ If you host a podcast, online show, panel, or community platform where conversations about emotional wellness, leadership, communication, or personal development take place—I’d be honored to join you as a guest.
I’m deeply passionate about bringing this message to people who need it: that you don’t have to become someone you’re not to effectively stand up for yourself.

If you think your audience would benefit from learning how to navigate difficult dynamics without fear, I’d love to connect.

📩 Message me directly or comment below if you're interested, and let’s start a conversation.

Thanks for helping me spread this mission—and helping others step into their peaceful power.

Warmly,
Michael Goulding, LCSW

Many times when we think of mental health issues we think of mindset and character. If we have proper character and apply the right way of thinking to a situation then we believe we can resolve whatever mental health challenges we face. While this can be true in some cases, many times there is often a misunderstanding of how physical/medical mental health can be.

The recent attention the Simone Biles withdrawing from the Olympics highlights many misunderstandings about mental health. Imagine if Simone had withdrawn from competition if she were having seizures brought on by the stress of her competitive situation. Would we be judging her mindset and character in the same way? Mental health can have the same paralyzing effect as any other physical illness.

Mental health can be very similar to the phenomenon as in other physiological illnesses. There are people who are predisposed to having a chemical imbalance in their brains that can lead them to anxiety, depression and in Simone’s case, ADHD. I have personally seen people’s lives transformed by medications that can correct these imbalances and lead people to happy productive lives.

The other physiological mental health phenomenon is related to the effects of trauma. In the case of Simone Biles, she has been very public about how her gymnastics team doctor sexually abused her along with others and has recently revealed the death of her aunt during the Tokyo Games. These kinds of trauma can have physiological impact on the nervous system that can relate to well over half of the medical conditions in a person. Bessel Van der Kolk, MD highlights this phenomenon of the trauma/body connection in his lifetime of trauma research in his famous book “The Body Keeps the Score”

A person experiences trauma. The trauma disrupts the nervous system. A faulty nervous system impairs the function of the body/organs and medical issues can appear. Different talk therapy treatments have shown to be effective in treating trauma and the effects can be measured in brain scans indicating neurological repair.

Mental health is much more complex than snapping out of it, getting yourself together, pushing through it or attention seeking by feeling sorry for yourself. It is not something that happens to weak people. I counsel many high-end educated professionals holding prominent executive positions in organizations we all know who suffer from mental health issues.

Again, mental health impacts people at the physiological level and all of us could benefit by recognizing the value of seeking treatment.

Feel free to share this post to help educate others on this matter.
