I love how ancient art found breastfeeding as beautiful as we do today 😍

Saw this at the Tuscon Art Museum this summer, and loved how something from ancient civilizations can still speak to us, transcending language, culture and time, reaching us on a purely human level.

In 1929 Ge**er began an advertising campaign to convince dieticians and pediatricians that canned baby food was just as nutritious as homemade food, and even better because it was scientifically prepared.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As part of the campaign, doctors received free Ge**er products for patients. Ge**er also funded research touting the health benefits of their food. That research—vaguely worded and devoid of peer review—was published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, positioning it as scientific fact.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Alongside these efforts, Ge**er stated that women who prepared their own baby food were neglecting their husbands—and babies. One 1933 ad read, “For Baby’s Sake, Stay Out of the Kitchen!”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Alongside these efforts, Ge**er advocated for starting solids at 3 months old. And by the 1950’s—after 20 years of advertising—the average age of introducing solids fell to just 6 weeks old.💔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since then the medical community realized that too-early introduction of solids displaced valuable nutrition from breast milk/formula. The consensus among medical institutions today (AAP, U.S. National Institutes for Health, and World Health Organization) is that it’s best to introduce solids at 6 months old. It is at this time that most babies are developmentally ready to eat and need more iron. Conveniently, 6 months is also when babies are capable of feeding themselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Baby food was invented. Mom guilt was marketed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is no perfect order of introducing solids. No no need for “stages” of thickness. These were all constructs in the name of profit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Convenience has its place. I love a good yogurt pouch and rely on Cheerios when traveling. But the idea that real food has to be hard isn’t good for anyone. Babies don’t need banana pudding or pricey pouches—a banana is fine!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is a reason feeding feels complicated. Corporations spent the last century telling your grandmothers and great-grandmothers that they would be bad moms and wives if they didn’t buy pre-prepared baby food. So the next time you feel a twinge of guilt for feeding your baby YOUR way, remember that it’s not you. It’s history.

If you are like a lot of people, it can be hard to drink enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Many people say they don't enjoy the taste of water. One way to help get the recommended amount of water during pregnancy, especially during the hot summer months coming up here in Arizona is to flavor your water to make it a little more palatable.

For me, I am a big tea drinker during the winter. And the tea doesn't stop going into summer, I just make cold teas instead. Today I made a cold elderberry tea.

Some people may feel they want a little bit more sweetener in their tea and some healthy ways to do that is either add a little bit of fruit such as strawberry slices or other desired fruit, or use natural, non-sugar sweeteners such as stevia.

For cold teas, boil 8 oz of water and steep 2 to 3 bags of tea for 5 minutes, and then pour over ice in a larger pitcher. Easy peasy!

Elderberry is a great source of antioxidants and has been associated with boosting the immune system, reducing blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

This week is ! Four years ago, I first stepped into the birthworker world, and it is still as exciting and gratifying as the first few births I was honored to hold space for. I also wish to honor my other sister (and brother!) doulas this week!

I am not sad about a dark, rainy, moody winter Monday afternoon. Slap of fat raindrops in muddy puddles, staccato of raindrops against the windows, the wind gusting against a groaning skeketon of my home. It's an excuse to live by romantic candlelight and drink hot tea. The romance inspires me, as well, as I begin anew on my certification projects. I am truly honored to be moving forward with this program through the esteemed Birth Arts International organization. Today I am putting together handouts for breastfeeding topics, but I am excited to continue to deepen my understanding and knowledge of .

Why vaginal seeding after cesarian birth is worth researching:

"Even if the composition eventually returns to the normal range akin to that of children born by vaginal delivery (9), a perturbed gut microbiota in this critical window may cause lifelong repercussions. The gut microbiota has the ability to affect host immune maturation (15, 16), and its perturbation during early life (17) may increase the risk for later development of asthma, allergies, and other immune disorders (18–25)."

Children born by cesarean section have an increased risk of developing asthma compared to children born by vaginal delivery and also have an altered gut microbiota composition. Stokholm et al. now report that these factors are linked. They found an increased risk of asthma in children born by cesare...
