Our world is rapidly changing around us and today many children feel like spaces that were once safe no longer are. And they don’t yet have the ability to process these events and feelings on their own.

There are good resources available to help.

Today is heavy in the aftermath of another mass shooting and international violence. Our hearts are with educators and students everywhere as they handle the grief and violence that has entered their lives. Alex Shevrin Venet at Unconditional Learning has this advice about teaching on the day after a crisis:

https://buff.ly/3ZoPfJj

✏️ Check in with yourself - Move your body, journal, collaborate with others, and lean on your support network.

❓ Don't rush to intellectualize - Give yourself and your students time to process emotionally before you jump in.

⭐ Validate and offer choices for support - Everyone processes differently, and it's important not to rush to "fix" these emotions in our students. Instead, witness their pain and listen to their needs.

☁️ Model not-knowing - It can sometimes feel like educators have to have big answers after tragedies. Instead, ask yourself 1) What I know, 2) What I think I know, & 3) What I want to know, and model that inquiry with your students.

❤️ Be gentle with yourself - Please remember that you are enough. There is immense pressure on educators to “get it right” when talking about hard topics. The moments after a crisis can feel like a fleeting opportunity, an open door through which you have to run at full speed. In reality, there is no room on the other side of that door containing perfect clarity, safety, or peace. Crisis and trauma fundamentally shift our relationship to the world, and unpacking that can take a lifetime. Just showing up for your students on day 1 is enough. Just holding space for them and letting them know you care is enough. You are enough.

I had a chance to visit Throught the Trees this week, talk with two of the founders, and walk some of their beautiful property. This is a fabulous nature immersion program. I love what they are doing!

“When children play in natural spaces, they’re far more likely to invent their own games than in more structured settings – a key factor in becoming self-directed and inventive adults later in life.' Richard Louv

This is so true and definitely the case with my children. This is a photo of my son and niece deeply absorbed in making a cake from elderflowers, grass and sand.

While children are naturally curious, for inquiry to be effectively used in school, you need to start with structured inquiry to provide students with the tools and habits of mind needed for productive inquiry.

A lag in the development of these skills can be caused by various factors and can produce a great deal of frustration and struggle. There is a hope! A good program and coach can make a difference.

What could be better than exploring and learning about the natural world while getting some fresh air with your family?

During our Forest Families program, we will meet one of our live animal ambassadors, spend some time exploring outside, and hopefully learn something new! This program will be geared more for elementary and middle schoolers, but all ages are welcome.

This month, we will become animal detectives and search for tracks and other signs animals may leave for us on Saturday, Jan. 28th from 11AM-12:30PM.

Tickets to this program include self-guided access to our Nature Center and Outdoor Ambassador Enclosures as well! For more information and to book tickets, head to thecenterforwildlife.org/events
