Frustration tolerance isn’t something kids are born with. It’s something they practice.

Small daily experiences — waiting, retrying, losing, finishing something hard — slowly build the ability to handle discomfort instead of shutting down.

The checklist in this post includes simple, everyday ways to strengthen frustration tolerance — without creating power struggles or constant conflict.

If this is something you're working on at home, we have more resources for you.

Comment “frustration123” and we’ll send you:

• Both of our in-depth blogs on frustration tolerance
• Our Frustration Tolerance Free Guide full of scripts and strategies

We also have more on frustration tolerance for members. Inside the Mind & Child membership, we also have an hour-long deep dive on frustration tolerance, along with our Parenting 101 course, Tantrum Course, and a full library of practical parenting tools ($13). You can navigate to our webpage via the link in our bio.

Until you’re raising a kid with autism… pause before you judge.

You see a meltdown.
I see sensory overload.

You see “bad behavior.”
I see a child fighting to regulate a world that’s too loud, too bright, too much.

You see me “not disciplining.”
I see myself choosing connection over control.

You don’t see the therapy hours.
The IEP meetings.
The constant advocating.

Autism isn’t bad parenting.
It isn’t a phase.
And it isn’t something you can fix.

It’s patience.
It’s research at midnight.
It’s celebrating milestones most people never notice.
It’s loving a child so fiercely you’ll stand between them and the world every single time.

Until you’re raising a kid with autism, be careful with your opinions.

And if you are?

You’re not weak.
You’re not failing.
You’re raising a child in a world that wasn’t built for them, and doing it with a strength most people will never understand.

They know. Even in Kindergarten. Even in Grade 1.
They see their peers picking up books with ease.

They want to read.
If they could, they would.

Struggling readers are not unmotivated.
They are not lazy.
They are not choosing this.

Cozy corners, book fairs, and assemblies create excitement. But none of that replaces the ability to actually read the words on the page.

That is not a motivation issue.
That is an instruction issue.

When we provide explicit, systematic sound to print instruction and enough practice to build automaticity, we give them access. And access is what makes a love of reading possible. 📚

Longitudinal studies show that students who receive early reading intervention in Kindergarten and Grade 1 have much stronger long-term outcomes than those who receive support later.

It is never too late to help a struggling reader, but the earlier the support starts, the easier it is to close gaps and build strong reading skills. Early support leads to better progress and protects motivation and confidence.

This is why early screening and early action matter so much.
