One common screening test for prostate cancer is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. PSA levels can be higher than normal for reasons other than prostate cancer.

The only way to confirm whether an abnormal PSA result is caused by cancer is through a biopsy. A biopsy involves taking small tissue samples from the prostate so they can be examined under a microscope. If cancer cells are found, your doctor will review the results with you and discuss appropriate treatment options.
