I had the pleasure of working with BSU student support services all day yesterday. We learned together how self-care and AI impact individuals and organizations.

Self-care in the age of AI is about using technology wisely while still protecting our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. AI can help reduce stress by improving organization, saving time, and supporting productivity, but constant connectivity and information overload can also increase burnout if we are not intentional. Healthy self-care means creating boundaries with technology, prioritizing real human connection, getting proper rest, and using AI as a tool to support life—not replace the habits that keep us grounded, resilient, and emotionally healthy.

Great evening speaking with Kinship of Park Rapids.
Mentoring kids is one of the most powerful ways to shape the future of individuals and communities. Research consistently shows that young people who have positive adult mentors are more likely to succeed academically, build healthy relationships, avoid risky behaviors, and develop confidence and resilience. In a world where many youth struggle with anxiety, isolation, and uncertainty, mentorship provides guidance, encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging. Sometimes one caring adult who listens, believes in them, and models healthy values can completely change the direction of a child’s life.

I was in the studio this morning.

Behind every clear message is a quiet moment like this—one voice, one microphone, and the courage to speak with purpose. A studio becomes more than equipment and sound waves; it becomes a place where ideas are shaped, stories are shared, and influence reaches far beyond the room itself. Whether through conversation, music, teaching, or encouragement, the power of communication can inspire change, build connection, and leave a lasting legacy long after the recording light turns off.

Research suggests that moderate levels of nervousness before public speaking can actually enhance performance rather than hinder it. Studies in performance psychology show that physiological arousal—such as increased heart rate and adrenaline—can improve attention, memory retrieval, and energy when interpreted as excitement instead of fear. The well-known Yerkes-Dodson principle also demonstrates that an optimal level of stress improves performance on complex tasks, including communication and presentations. In many cases, nervousness reflects personal investment and preparation, signaling that the speaker is engaged and motivated to perform well.

Growing positivity in our brain is like strengthening a mental muscle—the more we intentionally practice gratitude, encouragement, hope, and meaningful connection, the stronger those pathways become. Research in neuroscience shows that our brains are capable of change through repetition, a concept called neuroplasticity. When we focus on healthy relationships, celebrate progress, practice resilience, and intentionally notice what is going well, we train our minds to respond with greater optimism and emotional balance. Positivity does not mean ignoring hardship; it means building the ability to see possibility, purpose, and growth even in difficult moments.

Legacy and leadership go hand in hand—because every leader leaves something behind.
True leadership isn’t about short-term results, but about the lasting impact on people and culture. Great leaders invest in others, model integrity, and shape future leaders. In the end, your legacy is not what you achieve, but who you inspire and develop.
