Friends of the Castaic Shelter

Friends of the Castaic Shelter The Friends of the Castaic Shelter is a volunteer run page dedicated to increasing pet adoptions at the Castaic Animal Care Center. Closed Sundays. Sadly, NO.

Shelter is open to the public Monday-Saturday from 11-5. Email: castaic@animalcare.lacounty.gov Click link above to schedule an appointment to meet animals. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Will the shelter allow me to foster? Unless you are an approved foster who has completed the county's foster training class, the answer is sadly no.
2. Does the shelter require I come into the shelter to adopt? Yes, although due to Covid the shelter is currently closed and adoptions or “meet and greets” are by appointment only. If you are out of state and can find a 501(c)3 rescue who is an adoption partner of the Los Angeles County shelter system (DACC) they will be able to pull the pet for you.
3. Does the Castaic Shelter ship animals? No, the shelter doesn’t have the budget or manpower to ship animals.
4. Is the Castaic Shelter a "no kill" shelter? The shelter is far from a "no kill" shelter. The staff does not want to euthanize any animals - but unfortunately the shelter's intakes far exceed the adoptions. Castaic Shelter is not a rescue so please be aware that if you surrender an animal it may not get adopted.
5. Can you help and if so how? YES! If you are local you can sign up for the volunteer training program, but volunteer training is currently on hold due to Covid. You can always help us by networking and sharing our animals. If you wish to donate to our charitable arm, the "Dreams Come True" charity which provides outside medical help to pets at the Castaic Animal Care Center, you can do so by sending a tax deductible check to the shelter. No donation is too small! This page promotes the adoption and rescue of pets from the Castaic Shelter. All dogs and cats who are included in this album are at the Castaic Shelter and urgently in need of adoption or rescue.

Wait till you hear her story!💔
Our sweet Nala was surrendered to the Lancaster shelter, confused and pregnant. She ended up losing all her babies before being spayed and chipped. Without a chance to grieve, frightened and overlooked in the overcrowded conditions, she was transferred to Castaic to help her be seen. Immediately quarantined there due to exposure to another dog’s illness (which she never contracted), she’s completely healthy, beautiful, and has an expired 72-hour notice without having had much of a chance to find her human. She’s confused and clearly belongs in a loving home with a patient adopter and a go slow approach. Please SHARE to help her. You can meet Nala at

Walker needs our help! Meet Walker (ID )
1.5 yrs | 60 lbs | Husky/Shepherd mix
Walker is a medium energy pup who enjoys being pet and spending time with his people. He knows sit & down, takes treats gently, and responds well to redirection. Nala has had a rough start in life. A 2-yr-old German Shepherd , she was surrendered to the LancasterACC where she was scared and became lost and overlooked in the large overcrowded shelter. Despite that she received a 1 from their Behavior Team, the best score. Now in Castaic, she’s starting to warm up, playing well with calm dogs, and volunteers love her! She’d be a great loyal companion with a go slow approach, and she has SO much love to give!

PLEASE GIVE HER A CHANCE! Ava • we are all in love!
*4 years old
*55 pounds
*Behavior Assessment
She was loose with soft eyes, seeking affection from the runner as the collar was clasped around her neck. She had a neutral tail wag and soft eyes while greeting several dogs through the fence. She entered the yard and approached a group of dogs with soft eyes and natural ears. She became tense with a male husky and female shepherd lingered near her face, but relaxed quickly as they walked away. She spent a few minutes calmly roaming the yard, exchanging good greetings with other dogs. She rolled on her back with a wiggly body, soliciting affection from the handlers while roaming. She became playful, enticing play from a male pit bull but full play did not erupt. She was able to entice a male husky for chase play. She was comfortable with little to no contact while running but as soon as his play became physical, she would stop and freeze, only to resume chase soon after. She did display some minor arousal when other dogs were chasing around the yard at full speed. She would growl while chasing after them, chest bump them and nip at them before freezing in front of them while growling. She was easily steered by the handlers. She repeated this several times but did not escalate her behavior. Due to her behavior in the previous home, she is designated as BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, NO DOGS (REQ), MEDIUM ENERGY
