Friends of the Castaic Shelter The Friends of the Castaic Shelter is a volunteer run page dedicated to increasing pet adoptions at the Castaic Animal Care Center. Closed Sundays. Sadly, NO.

1. Will the shelter allow me to foster? Unless you are an approved foster who has completed the county's foster training class, the answer is sadly no.
2. Does the shelter require I come into the shelter to adopt? Yes, although due to Covid the shelter is currently closed and adoptions or “meet and greets” are by appointment only. If you are out of state and can find a 501(c)3 rescue who is an adoption partner of the Los Angeles County shelter system (DACC) they will be able to pull the pet for you.
3. Does the Castaic Shelter ship animals? No, the shelter doesn’t have the budget or manpower to ship animals.
4. Is the Castaic Shelter a "no kill" shelter? The shelter is far from a "no kill" shelter. The staff does not want to euthanize any animals - but unfortunately the shelter's intakes far exceed the adoptions. Castaic Shelter is not a rescue so please be aware that if you surrender an animal it may not get adopted.
5. Can you help and if so how? YES! If you are local you can sign up for the volunteer training program, but volunteer training is currently on hold due to Covid. You can always help us by networking and sharing our animals. If you wish to donate to our charitable arm, the "Dreams Come True" charity which provides outside medical help to pets at the Castaic Animal Care Center, you can do so by sending a tax deductible check to the shelter. No donation is too small! This page promotes the adoption and rescue of pets from the Castaic Shelter. All dogs and cats who are included in this album are at the Castaic Shelter and urgently in need of adoption or rescue.

Time is running out for these seven precious souls. Each one has a current or expired 72-hour plea — meaning that any day could be their last 💔

The staff and volunteers at Castaic Shelter adore these dogs. They know their goofy quirks, their gentle spirits, and their loving hearts — and the thought of losing them is breaking everyone’s hearts. These dogs deserve more than a countdown clock. They deserve a chance.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering or adopting, this is the moment. Their survival depends on it.

These four dogs at Castaic Shelter are out of time. Each is labeled Rescue Only, meaning they can only leave the shelter through an approved rescue organization — and they need plans in place by Monday, October 20. 💔

Every one of them deserves a chance at life, love, and safety beyond the shelter walls. They’re counting on us to help make that happen.

Shy sweet Acorn came in as a stray and nobody came for her. She’s confused and shakes in her kennel. Acorn is a 1 year old, 27 lb Disney-dog cute Terrier. She’s a bit timid but very loving once she trusts you. She seems calm around other dogs but has not been tested. Feel free to bring yours in for a fence meet and greet! She’ll thrive with an adopter who has a gentle touch, and once she feels safe you’ll have an adorable loyal companion.

URGENT
Fendi!
handsome 3-year-old German Shepherd weighing in at
90 lbs.
This playful guy LOVES his ball and could happily fetch for hours. He already knows "sit" and is learning "down" and
"paw." Fendi adores attention and pets, though his excitement sometimes shows-he's practicing "off" and making great progress. He can be a little strong on leash, but he's eager to learn and will respond well to training.
Fendi would thrive as the only pet in an adults-only home or with older, respectful kids who can match his energy and give him the structure he needs.
Fendi was surrendered with Cocoa when their owner was deported. Don't let this be where his story ends!

Remember Toffee, ? Here’s what Toffee’s foster mom has to say about him:
“Hello. I am fostering Toffee.
He is doing great. We’ve had him 7 days. He’s already house broken and knows how to use the dog door with no accidents. He’s good with my 3yo granddaughter. Needs leash training, he tends to pull. We are working on that. Loves to have fun. He’s gained weight and looks really good. He sleeps on his bed.”
If you are interested in adopting any of our foster dogs, please reach out to our foster coordinator, Kelsey Tarleton at ktarleton@animalcare.lacounty.gov. You can make an appointment to meet fosters. If you adopt a dog in foster care, you save two lives! You save the life of the dog adopted and you allow the foster to foster another dog out of the shelter. Fostering allows us to learn more about dogs in a home environment. We love you Luna! Luna has obedience and leash skills and gets along with calm dogs. She loves walks and playing catch. Luna will thrive with a family committed to her fitness so she can live her best life. She has a mellow personality and would do best in a home with no kids!

Miso is EXTREMELY URGENT !!
!!
Miso , is listed as a 2 year old, 55 pound, male Alaskan Husky who came in as a stray. He seems to have a nice medium energy, and enjoys playing with balls. He knows sit, takes treats gently and walks nicely on leash. He seeks out affection! He arrived with dermatitis which is responding nicely to treatment.(Adopt with health waiver) The Behavior Team said this about playgroup, "Due to his challenging behavior toward the other dogs and requiring constant intervention from the handlers, he will be designated as no other dogs recommended at this time."

Blaze, , is a 2 year old, 70 pound German Shepherd Mix. He was surrendered due to landlord. Blaze is friendly with other dogs. He knows basic commands and is working on leash skills. His owner said he was lovable and loyal. Blaze would thrive with an active family who will take him on adventures and make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

You’ll always be a Pearl! Pearl, , is listed as a 2 year old, 73 pound Husky-Collie mix. She loves people and gets along with calm dogs. Pearl seems to have beginning obedience and leash skills. She is treat motivated. Pearl was adopted and returned due to an incident with the cat in the home. Adopters will be required to sign a History of Known Aggression Disclosure due to the cat incident and there must be no cats in the home. If you are looking for a walking partner and a fun pup, Pearl might be your girl!
