Southeast Utah Health Department Announces First Measles Case in Carbon County

Carbon County, UT - The Southeast Utah Health Department (SEUHD) has confirmed a positive Measles case in Carbon County. There are no exposures in Carbon County Schools from this individual. Public health officials are actively conducting contact tracing to notify known individuals who may have been exposed. For public exposures where specific individuals cannot be identified, you can find a statewide list of measles exposure locations in Utah at epi.utah.gov/measles-response/. This case is a vaccinated individual between the ages of 45-64. Due to medical privacy laws, SEUHD will not be releasing any further information about this confirmed case.

Measles is extremely contagious, but a highly effective vaccine can give you the best protection possible and reduce your risk of severe complications if you were to contract the disease. The Southeast Utah Health Department is actively responding and working with partners to quickly identify exposures, notify those who may be at risk, and help prevent further spread.

Measles symptoms, which typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure, can include:
-High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- A rash that starts on the face and spreads downward

Anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially if they have been in contact with a known case, should contact their healthcare provider. The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. Individuals who are unsure about their vaccination status should check their immunization records and consult their healthcare provider. The Southeast Utah Health Department has the measles vaccine available in all offices.

Prescilla joined Blue Tern Home Care LLC as a CNA in our new San Juan County region, where she has played a key role in helping launch and grow this area.
