Getting back in the school swing of things can include big swings of excitement and anxiety. All that anxious and excited energy can result in melt downs, sleep issues, and exhaustion. These are just a few ideas to help navigate these first few weeks:
💬 The first weeks aren’t for perfection—they’re for connection. Questions from parents can feel like one more demand. Try making connection statements instead of asking questions. “I was thinking about you today.” “I wonder what it was like seeing your friends again.” “I bet this new schedule is taking time to get used to.” This may create more space for conversation.
🧠Validating feelings while avoiding reasoning or fixing. It is typical for kids to have a range of feelings as school begins. We can sometimes want to fix feelings like sadness or frustration. Sometimes all that is needed to move through tough feelings is acknowledging them.
🤸♀️Movement or quiet time breaks after school and before jumping into homework can help kiddos regulate after a long day of experiences.
🫁When kids are experiencing overwhelm, they may resist direct interventions. Staying near, modeling and using co-regulation can provide safety and examples as they work through big feelings and tiredness.
💌 Send notes in backpacks and lunches to created a home to school connection. Also a comfort or sensory item can be helpful.
Back to school is a sensory, emotional, and logistical adventure. Together we can support students through this! 💛
