This is exactly what is wrong with insurance. Ugh. Disgusting hurdles from a system we pay into our whole life.

Bo Yennie suffered a spinal injury in a severe ski crash at Steamboat. He is currently in a nursing home where he receives physical and occupational therapy, but United has made it increasingly difficult, requiring reauthorization every two days.

I'm a S**t Talker and Mover.

It's a gift that gives. I worked in the ICU for a long time and I can make patients who have been bed bound and constipated crap the bed in 30min. No lie. With exercise.

The nurses couldn't stop thanking me for my skill. Don't worry I always help with cleanup!

Anyway. I see older adults in their homes for physical therapy or just plain personal training . They battle constipation constantly. Most of the time it is from sedentary behavior and poor diet. Generally speaking.

I do a food diary review of about 3 days to figure out their fiber and protein intake for any new client with feedback for their goals. Then we train the bowels.

👀Get up
💦Drink warm fluids , water preferably then whatever.
🚶Move. Take a walk. Do the exercises I prescribe.
I love body weight movements and Pilates/yoga style stretching and breath control for my personalized exercise programs.

💩
Then sit on the toilet. Use that squatty potty. Sit there and train your bowels to go.

Your welcome!

You ever do a physical therapy assessment on the sideline of your kids soccer match?

I do!

People find out you are a PT and they ask for help. I don't mind. I kind of nerd out .

This person has had low back pain for over 6 months. Now it's going into her butt and hip. She's been carrying her kids on one side for years (I can relate after having 4 kids in 10 years ) .

1st item : stop carrying that toddler on your hip.
2nd item: do we have hip mobility and or weakness?
3rd item : identify movements that aggravate the pain
4th item: find the right exercises to work on.

There are other small nuances to consider, but this was in the middle of a field eval.

Try the McGill Big 3 exercises to see how your core handles it.

What's a PT to do?

Good problems to have. I'm thankful.

"Thank you for assisting me in my CABG3 healing process. I have appreciated our time & chats together. Thank you for teaching me. Much has been accomplished with your gentle pushes and assistance the past several weeks.”

Cardiac rehab isn't dead although insurance and corporate clinics may say so. Just find the right person.

12 sessions over 60 days and my client was able to return to walking her neighborhood without a walker & no rest breaks for 30+min. When we started she could only do 5 laps in her house with symptoms.

My 94 yr old client is getting his social life back up to where he wants it. He and his wife love to go out to symphonies and speaker series. I'm jealous he gets to meet Kamala Harris tonight for one.

6mo ago he couldn't walk around his home with a walker without fear of falling or his legs giving out. He has climbed back into function and strength. I tease him that he is gaining inches each week by improving his postural muscles. His endurance is skyrocketing. Just 1x a week of strength, balance, and HIIT workouts. That's it.

Do the things you love when you age. As Bernie says "I don't have that many years left!!”

Thoughts?

Any experiences like this as a lowly allied health provider?

I can say it has happened way more than I'd like to admit to. How broken is that?

I'll always take in another view from someone and discuss, not berate.

Egos are strong out there.

There is no best exercise. Just move heavy stuff. Use variety. Strength training is necessary and modifiable for everyone.

Hope this helps.

I completed an upper body dry needling course this weekend and nerded out with my fellow fitness PT nerds.

We were in class from Friday to Sunday and I'm glad I don't have a needle phobia.

Dry Needling is a fantastic modality to have in my PT tool box.

It can treat a myriad of issues and I'll hopefully be posting more on this. Especially as the Spring Baseball and Softball season gets rolling for our athletes looking for a good recovery strategy to help prevent injury and recover faster.

So who has heard of dry needling?

Sunday Thoughts.
