Understanding your health and what may be abnormal is hard to know. Although some changes in your body are completely normal, they can still be scary when they happen. It’s always important to recognize these changes and know the best time to contact a doctor. Remember to stay informed and proactive about your breast health.

Many different factors, such as age, ethnicity, habits, and physical characteristics, can contribute to a woman developing breast cancer. Your family history can also increase your risk, so it’s important you understand your family’s background.

Although some women receive breast cancer by chance, a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes — which are responsible for preventing the growth of cancer cells — can elevate your chance of getting breast cancer. Even though these mutated genes can be passed down through a family, they are still uncommon. When evaluating your risk of breast cancer, it’s important to examine both your mother and father’s side of the family.

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Although ultrasounds are commonly associated with detecting pregnancies, they can do more than check a baby’s health. In fact, ultrasounds can detect infections, cardiovascular issues, tumors and cysts, uterine fibroids, and thyroid conditions.

Are you experiencing pain, numbness, or tingling in your knee when you walk? If you answered “yes,” you may have an osteochondroma, a common benign tumor, in your knee. Osteochondroma occurs when there is an abnormal overgrowth of cartilage and bone near the growth plate of the bone.

In this photo, the overgrowth is highlighted yellow, showing the mass. Although this specific benign tumor has a low chance of malignant transformation, it is still important to have it diagnosed so you can receive the necessary treatment.

Did you know…?

In the United States, about 795,000 people have a stroke every year, 13% of them being hemorrhagic.

The image below is a CT scan with a presence of a hemorrhagic stroke. The bright red areas in the image represent the hemorrhagic stroke, or in this case, an intracerebral hemorrhage. We know this is an intracerebral hemorrhage due to the density in the brain tissue. Someone might have this kind of stroke when their blood pressure becomes dangerously high, causing their arteries to change and rupture. This abnormal amount of blood in the brain creates pressure on the surrounding tissues and disrupts the normal day-to-day functions of the brain.

What is a CT scan?

A CT scan is an x-ray procedure that obtains detailed, cross-sectional images of various parts of the body such as the head, stomach, or chest. Unlike an MRI, a CT scan shows bone and joint abnormalities, blood clots, and organ injuries. Not only that, but CTs can also diagnose muscle and bone disorders and pinpoint the location of tumors, blood clots, or infections. After a CT scan is complete, doctors can then use the results to direct them to the location of the issue before performing surgery.
