New research reveals that what we eat may significantly impact our dementia risk, especially for women and older adults. A comprehensive study of over 131,000 participants found that following healthy dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet and MIND diet could reduce dementia risk by up to 24%.
Key findings:
Mediterranean, MIND, and other anti-inflammatory diets showed protective effects.
Benefits were more pronounced in women than men.
Pro-inflammatory diets high in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates increased dementia risk.
Effects were strongest in participants over 60.
The study reinforces that food should be part of our health prescription. As one expert noted: "Doctors should be talking to patients about brain-healthy diets just like we talk about heart health."
This 13.5-year follow-up study adds solid evidence to support eating more whole foods, vegetables, nuts, and berries while reducing processed foods for long-term brain health.
