A lot of people have questions about Lindsey Vonn‘s injury. The reports say she had a tibia fracture. It must’ve been a pretty severe one because she is in what is called an external fixator. Pins go from the bars into your bones to stabilize things temporarily while the soft tissues heal. Later it is removed and either a nail or plates and screws applied. Initially, you can’t make big incisions or the wounds may not heal or get infected. This is why she needs multiple surgeries. Additionally, it sounds like she may have had what’s called a compartment syndrome, where there is so much swelling in her lower leg that they had to release the pressure.
We wish her well, but it’s a big injury to come back from.

Mom, I’m going on the cheapest ski vacation ever to Gore Mountain, NY....
That’s how I tore my ACL and started a journey to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. I was scrubbing into surgery at the University of Pittsburgh with my mentor, Dr. Fu, even before I went to medical school.
I’ve unfortunately had more than a few surgeries since and so I feel that I have a unique viewpoint when I tell you about your knee, shoulder, hip, bicep or carpal tunnel...Ha!
I was fortunate in training in Morgantown, WV to work for a decade at a level one trauma center. There is not much I haven’t seen. I was even the Foot and Ankle person and backup Pediatric person at times. We were lucky that we had so many patients that we didn’t have to be aggressive with surgery. Since I’ve moved to Maryland I see that many doctors downtown take a very different approach to Orthopaedics.
I’ll great you with a smile and I’ll do my best to get you better.
I’ll treat you the same as the hospital CEO or my family.
I’ll be honest with you and tell you when I’m not sure what’s wrong. I will pursue every conservative treatment I can....but if you need surgery I have the experience and great hands to get it done. We are busy here, over 7000 visits last year, because you will get great care.
At CAO: OACM there are no residents or fellows doing the procedure. Just me. Every time!
