What does science say about this mind over matter stuff? The answer depends upon which science you ask.

The science of conventional medicine tries to reassure us that none of the phenomena we just described actually exists. That’s because today’s biology textbooks and mass media describe the body and its component cells as machines made of biochemical building blocks.

This perception has programmed the general public to accept the belief in genetic determinism, which is the notion that genes control physical and behavioral traits. This sad interpretation is that our fate is inextricably linked to ancestral characteristics determined by genetic blueprints derived from our parents and their parents and their parent’s parents, ad infinitum. This causes people to believe that they are victims of heredity.

Fortunately, the Human Genome Project (HGP) has pulled the rug out from under conventional science’s beliefs concerning genetic control. This is ironic because it set out to prove the opposite. According to conventional belief, the complexity of a human should require vastly more genes than are found in a simple organism. Surprisingly, the HGP discovered that humans have nearly the same number of genes as lowly animals, a finding that inadvertently reveals a fundamental myth-perception underlying genetic determinism. Science’s pet dogma has long outlived its usefulness and needs to be mercifully put to sleep.

So, if genes do not control life . . . (pause to formulate a mind-blowing question) . . . what does?

The answer is: we do!

Now something I found over the years that’s really fascinating to me, is that we don't connect how we feel with what we eat or how much we rest or sleep, how much we exercise, or how much time we spend with friends, or how much bad news and media we’re exposed to.

I had a patient who said, "Geez, doctor, I'm so tired. I don't know what to do. I'm always tired. My brain's not working." I said, "Well, how much do you sleep at night?" He goes, "Well, five or six hours." And I'm like, "Well, get eight hours of sleep and try and see what happens." So, we really don't connect the dots.

Now, once we make those connections, we can start to change those simple habits that can have profound effects on our health long term.

Feeling fully focused, energized, and having great brain health requires really following the two simple principles of functional medicine: taking out the bad stuff and putting in the good stuff. Taking out the bad food, toxins, allergens, micro-stress, etc. Then adding in the good stuff like the right food, nutrients, light, air, water, sleep, relaxation, connection, meaning, love, and purpose.

Survival starting point: Civilization, (i.e., each and every one of us) must cut its use of planetary resources by a minimum of 1/3. Energy, whether in bodily or financial form, is a commodity that can be audited and must be considered. In our review of our energy usage, an important filter to apply: Does the anticipated energy expenditure offer a return to support our personal, or our community’s, health and vitality? The reason is we use a lot of our life energy engaging in activities that do not offer any benefit to our survival.
