Great article summary.
I read a fantastic blog post from Dr. Peter Attia this morning. I will link it below. I wanted to highlight one part of it because I think it made a lot of sense.
We should no longer be requiring anyone to get vaccinated if they choose not to. With the data we have, it can not be justified.
The case FOR mandating vaccines is to protect the vaccinated from the unvaccinated. This assumes three things as put forth by Dr. Attia:
1ļøā£ Vaccines DO NOT provide complete protection to the vaccinated (or else why would we care about what the unvaccinated do).
š This is true. No vaccine is 100% effective. However, the data is abundantly clear that they reduce severe disease and death. When you combine that with the fact that Omicron is so much less severe than any of the other variants with the advances in treatment you see the risk of death for those who elect to get vaccinated is microscopically small. If this is the case, those who choose the vaccine should not fear those who do not choose it.
2ļøā£ Prior infection DOES NOT confer immunity on par with vaccination.
š I've talked about natural immunity a lot. It is very, very effective - likely more effective than vaccine immunity.
3ļøā£ Vaccines DO prevent transmission of the virus (which is why we want the unvaccinated vaccinated, even if we donāt care about their health, per se).
š The vaccines do not seem to do a good job preventing transmission. There is some benefit to clearing viral load quicker in those who are vaccinated, but the vaccines appear only to have a very mild impact on preventing viral transmission.
The last argument for mandates is so we can prevent hospitals from being over run. As more and more data becomes available, one thing is clear to me; each flu season ICUs around the country fill up with the sick. Hospitals routinely run at 90% of their ICU capacity. The issue is probably not ICU space, but ICU staff. A recent survey found that approximately 18% of healthcare workers have quit their jobs since February 2020, while another 12% have been fired or laid off. Mandating vaccines and firing staff that won't comply, especially in a population that likely has very high levels of natural immunity because of exposure, makes no sense.
I think the major issue is that political leaders are not completely listening to the science. The political leaders created a plan and they are sticking to it no matter what. They appear willing to die on that hill. Why? Because political leaders who change their stance are viewed as flip-floppers. They're viewed as weak. They don't get re-elected. Science, on the other hand, is a process. It constantly changes. It's time we let go of the politics and follow the science.
