Safely back from walking the Camino Portuguese. Will be processing the experiences and insights for a long time to come... For now, a few photos to share the beauty, bookmarked with our first day in Porto and arriving in Santiago.

Walking into the Unknown

Stepping away from my work for the longest break since cancer treatment five years ago, so I've been thinking about the benefits of intentionally creating some liminal or “in between” spaces in life.

I am off to walk the Camino de Santiago through Portugal and Spain with my oldest daughter. Although it’s never easy to detach from day-to-day life, this ultimately is what will create more for me and for those I love and am here to help.

Walking a few hundred kilometers through unstructured days undoubtedly will create space to learn new things about myself and my desire to serve others.

Looking forward to connecting on the other side. For now, I’m off to walk (literally) the talk…

My thoughts on the blog - https://molliemarti.com/2022/10/people-are-hurting-how-can-we-help/

Last month, I was chatting with a colleague at the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency (MVAA) and he asked, “Have you heard about any resilience summits in Michigan?” “No, I haven’t. What have you heard?” “Nothing – and that’s a problem. People really need this support right now. Would W...

A wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on formative experiences and relationships. Grateful for all of my Loras College profs & mentors in and outside of the classroom. As we say at Worldmaker International = we thrive together!

Mollie (Weighner) Marti (’87), JD, PhD is this year’s Professional Achievements Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient.

Mollie is the Founder and CEO of Worldmaker International, a human resilience organization that she started in response to a series of teen su***des in Iowa. It has grown to lead resilience building in various sectors including community crisis response, families & youth, military communities, and workplaces. Using her education and life experiences, she has used her personal research and expertise to help others build their capacity to prepare for, adapt to, and grow through adversity.

“I truly believe that working together, we can build capacity to use adversity for growth and to make our world a more kind and just place for the most vulnerable among us.”

The relationships formed at Loras and beyond have helped influence Mollie’s career. From professors such as Mike Budde ('70) and Chris (Steiner) Apel ('75) to influences outside of the classroom like G.B. Noonan ('51), Donna (Metz) Loewen ('77) and Faye Finnegan ('76), Mollie believes Loras gave her a solid foundation of support yet gave her enough room to spread her wings.

“Loras is special to me because of the vibrancy of community and how connections made as a student live on. For example, when my daughter transferred to a new school, I emailed the math teacher and got a reply, ‘Are you Mollie from Loras? Your picture looks familiar.’ It was Kathy Geers (’88), a classmate of mine who I hadn’t talked with in years! I then watched her become my daughter’s favorite teacher and an important role model. There are countless Duhawks making these types of impact in the world each day – what an extraordinary legacy!”

Congratulations to Mollie and the rest of this year’s Distinguished Alumni. Celebrate this year’s recipients on Saturday, October 8 at 5:30 p.m. Register today by visiting https://alumni.loras.edu/HCDinner.

Courage is essential for building resilience.

Courage is needed to engage in the work of honest self-reflection, living your values, communicating clear boundaries, persevering through setbacks & asking for help.

Courage is a practice that greases the wheels of resilience building, especially when brought alongside vulnerability.

Certain modern entities exist by feeding fear. This comes at a high price to humanity by constricting our ability to see, hear & fully regard each other.

The research is clear, kindness builds resilience AND kindness is contagious!

Take for example this workplace study on prosocial behaviors. Researchers examined the behaviors of employees who were randomly assigned to one of three groups:

- Givers were instructed to perform five acts of kindness for targeted recipients
- Receivers were led to believe the study was about workplace morale and tasked with discretely keeping track of generous behaviors received
- The Control Group also was tasked with keeping track of generous behaviors received but were not targeted to receive prosocial acts as part of the study

Both Givers and Receivers reported higher levels of happiness and well-being than the Control Group, with lower rates of depression and higher job satisfaction.

Two months later the Receivers weren't only repaying acts of kindness to the Givers, the Recievers were also paying it forward in a big way. In fact, Receivers engaged in 278% more acts of kindness than the Control Group.

Humans are tribal beings, designed to give and receive help. We need each other in so many ways. If you are breathing, you are a helper.

GET TO KNOW ME

Hi, I’m Mollie. A psychologist, lawyer, researcher, humanitarian and wholemaker relentlessly dedicated to helping you thrive and strengthen others.

Born and raised an Iowa girl, I proudly call the Midwest home. On my first day of kindergarten, after taking one look at that dark haired, blue-eyed boy, I began singing, my “I’m going to marry Monte” song.

Twenty years later…I did. Another 27 years by his side, the best advice I have:

Support each other’s dreams to the greatest extent possible while staying true to yourself.
