🌦️ Wellness Wednesday:

If you’ve lived in Iowa long enough, you know we sometimes get all four seasons in a single day! One minute it feels like summer, the next you’re wishing for a winter coat. Checking the forecast before you head out (and dressing in layers) can save you from freezing or overheating. Comfort = wellness.

We Remember.

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost and the heroes who rose in the face of tragedy on September 11, 2001.

We remember the courage of first responders, the unity of our nation, and the strength that carried us forward. May we never forget the importance of compassion, service, and love for one another.

🕯️ “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5

🎉Mental health Program launch! 🎉

We are excited to announce our new mental health program. Doctoral-level counseling students will serve our patients under the supervision of our Mental Health Program Director, Dr. Ann Safo, D.O. This team will provide compassionate, professional care on-site at the clinic.

Services will include:
• Screenings
• Assessments
• Treatment

By offering these services in a familiar, supportive setting, we hope to break down barriers that prevent people from seeking help.

This program is made possible through a generous grant from the Grandon Charitable Foundation and a new partnership with Mount Mercy University.

We are deeply grateful for the partnerships and support that make this program possible. Most of all, we’re thankful for the opportunity to walk alongside our patients, meeting needs not only for their physical health but for their emotional and spiritual well-being too!

📚 Wellness Wednesday: Back-to-School Study Tips! ✏️

With students heading back to school, we thought this would be the perfect time to share a few wellness-centered study and time management tips!

Whether you're starting a new semester or just trying to get back into a routine, these strategies can help you stay focused and balanced:

✅ Set specific, realistic goals
⏰ Use a planner or calendar to block off study times
🧠 Take short breaks to rest your brain
📵 Limit distractions—put the phone away during study time
😴 Prioritize sleep and don’t cram late at night
💧 Stay hydrated and fuel your body with nutritious snacks

Starting strong sets the tone for the whole school year! You’ve got this! 💪

🎉📚Bible Drive Wrap-Up: God is Amazing!📖🎉

Thank you to all the churches and individuals who participated in our Bible Drive this past month. God worked through you to provide 375 Bibles and resources, along with $466 in monetary gifts for purchasing non-English Bibles.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to offer God’s Word in the languages our patients understand best. So far this year, 271 Bibles have been given out to individuals from many backgrounds. Each one represents a seed planted, carrying the promise of eternal life and the hope found in Scripture.

The need continues, and you can still help. Please consider being part of this ministry by donating Bibles or giving toward their purchase. Monetary gifts can be designated by writing “Bibles” in the memo line of your check.

If you have any questions about the Bible Drive, please contact Jody Slife, SCC.

Thank you for coming alongside us to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of those we serve. Your partnership is helping change lives in eternal ways.💙

Our Story

His Hands Free Clinic is dedicated to providing high quality healthcare at no cost to uninsured and underinsured people of Eastern Iowa. His Hands offers medical, dental, chiropractic, mental health, woman’s health, physical therapy, social work services, prescription assistance, durable medical equipment and prayer support.

The initial motivation to create a free clinic came from a challenge issued by the Christian Medical and Dental Society in 1991. Dr. Jim Bell attended that conference and upon returned to Cedar Rapids gathered his colleagues to create The Cedar Rapids Free Medical Clinic. The clinic opened in May 1992, in a space donated by The Jane Boyd Community Center.

In the early days, the clinic was only open for three hours every other Monday night. As the need for free care became more evident, Dr. Ken Cearlock joined the clinic, allowing it to be open every Monday night. Soon numerous nurses, social workers and pharmacists joined the effort. Year after year, the demands on the clinic have increased. In 1996, The Cedar Rapids Free Medical Clinic was incorporated as His Hands Ministries; they obtained non-profit status and formed a Board of Directors and an Executive Director was hired to oversee the day-to-day operations. Extra clinics were added for primary care on Thursdays and then Tuesdays, as well as specialty clinics in gynecology, podiatry and general internal medicine. A prescription assistance program was started to address the need for medications.

Patient rosters continued to swell and in 2001, the clinic saw over 5000 patients. In 2002, a search began for an alternate clinic site. In the preliminary stages of the search process, philosophical differences were pulling the Board of Directors in different directions. Several Board members and the Executive Director resigned and the clinic split into two organizations: the Community Health Free Clinic and Cedar Rapids Free Medical Clinic.
