Today is National ! A 20 second hug can act as a powerful emotional reset. It calms your nervous system, reduces stress and strengthens emotional connection.

If hugs aren't comfortable, similar benefits can be felt from holding hands, petting an animal or laying under a weighted blanket.

We honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by recognizing mental health as a fundamental part of human dignity. Caring for our minds, supporting one another and breaking the stigma around mental health are powerful ways to live out Dr. King’s dream of a more just and humane world. Together, we can be a trusted support when life gets tough.

Our services and business office are open today. Call or text 988, or call 319-362-2174, to reach a caring, compassionate counselor any time, 24/7.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

His words remind us that courage is revealed not in comfort, but in moments of challenge—when standing up for justice, dignity, and humanity matters most.

At NAMI, we carry that call forward by advocating for mental health care, equity, and compassion for all. 🕊️

This week, we celebrate the remarkable career and retirement of Leland Freie, marking more than 32 years of dedicated service to our organization. Throughout his tenure, Leland held several roles, most recently serving as the Shelter Day Manager.

In recognition of his lasting impact, we are proud to name the kitchen at the emergency youth shelter “The Leland Freie Kitchen.” Over the years, Leland planned and prepared countless meals for the youth we serve. We wish you the best in retirement - you will be missed!

We have exciting news, thanks to Junior League of Cedar Rapids! Our Headquarters location in Downtown Cedar Rapids is getting a brand new kitchen to use for We Are AMP Iowa meals!

A special thanks to Corda Credit Union for launching this special campaign and making it possible. We greatly appreciate your support!

The Achieving Maximum Potential peer group meets at our facility twice a month. It is open to young people ages 12-22 who have experienced an out-of-home placement, such as foster care. Youth build life and leadership skills while advocating for positive change to Iowa’s child welfare system.

For about the last decade, Junior League of Cedar Rapids has provided a hot meal at every AMP meeting. When we moved to our new building in 2023, we lacked an adequate kitchen space. In 2025, Junior League of Cedar Rapids embarked on a campaign to make the new kitchen a reality, providing a safe, well-stocked kitchen for AMP meals for years to come.

We can't wait to share the new space, and see how it can help AMP youth learn and grow!
