Why Swelling Is Not “Just Water” 💧

Understanding Interstitial Fluid, Inflammation & Lymph Load 🌿**

Women are often told:

“It’s just water retention.”
“Drink less salt.”
“It’s hormonal.”
“It’s normal.”

But if swelling were just water, it wouldn’t:
• Feel tight, painful or heavy 😣
• Worsen with stress, illness or inflammation
• Appear in specific areas like the feet, ankles, abdomen, chest or face
• Come with fatigue, brain fog or pressure sensations

Swelling is not simply excess water.
It is often a sign of interstitial fluid overload and lymphatic strain.

Let’s break this down — gently and clearly 🤍

What Is Interstitial Fluid? 🧬

Between every cell in your body is a microscopic space called the interstitium.
This space is filled with interstitial fluid — a mixture of:
• Water 💧
• Proteins
• Immune cells 🛡️
• Metabolic waste
• Inflammatory by-products 🔥

This fluid is meant to move.

It is collected and cleared primarily by the lymphatic system — not the kidneys.

When this system becomes overloaded or sluggish, fluid doesn’t just disappear…
it accumulates.

Why Swelling Is Often Inflammatory, Not Just Fluid 🔥

During inflammation:
• Blood vessels become more permeable
• Proteins leak into the interstitial space
• Fluid is pulled in and held there

This type of swelling:
• Feels dense or tight
• Doesn’t respond well to diuretics
• Fluctuates from day to day
• Often worsens at night or in heat 🌙☀️

This isn’t “water weight.”
This is inflammatory fluid.

The Lymphatic System’s Role (That No One Explains) 🌿

Your lymphatic system:
• Drains interstitial fluid
• Clears inflammatory proteins
• Transports immune waste
• Relieves tissue pressure

But here’s the key point:

👉 It has no pump of its own.

It relies on:
• Muscle movement 🚶‍♀️
• Diaphragmatic breathing 🫁
• Fascial mobility
• Postural changes

When these are compromised — through stress, surgery, inflammation, pain, illness or long periods of sitting — lymph flow slows.

Fluid builds up quietly…
until the body can’t compensate anymore.

Why Diuretics Often Don’t Fix the Problem 🚫💊

Diuretics act on the kidneys, not the lymphatic system.

They:
• Remove water from the bloodstream
• Do not remove protein-rich interstitial fluid
• Can even worsen tissue dehydration

So swelling may:
• Temporarily reduce
• Quickly return
• Or shift to another area

Because the root cause — lymphatic load — was never addressed.

Why Swelling Shows Up in Certain Areas 📍

Swelling tends to appear where:
• Lymph flow is weakest
• Gravity pulls fluid downward ⬇️
• Tissue has been injured, scarred or inflamed

Common areas include:
• Feet and ankles
• Calves and knees
• Lower abdomen
• Chest and underarms
• Face and eyelids

These aren’t random places.
They are drainage bottlenecks.

Swelling Is a Message, Not a Failure 🤍

Swelling isn’t your body “holding onto weight.”
It’s your body saying:

“I am overloaded.”
“I need support.”
“I need flow — not force.”

When the lymphatic system is gently supported, swelling often reduces without aggressive measures.

The Takeaway 🌿

Swelling is rarely “just water.”
It’s often a combination of:
• Inflammation
• Protein-rich fluid accumulation
• Lymphatic congestion
• Nervous system stress

And it deserves understanding — not dismissal.

✨Ever wonder why people with dysautonomia (including POTS) feel dehydrated no matter how much they drink and still p*e constantly?

I’m reading a book about EDS, with a big focus on hEDS and related autonomic issues, and this section stopped me in my tracks.

It explains something called the Aldosterone Paradox, and honestly… it explains SO much.

Here’s the simple version:

When blood pools in the lower half of the body (common in EDS and POTS), the kidneys, which also sit low, mistakenly think there’s too much blood volume.

So what do they do?
🫠 They signal the body to get rid of fluid and electrolytes.

Meanwhile…
• The upper body is underfilled
• The brain gets less blood flow
• The heart has less preload
• Symptoms spiral

The result?
You p*e more.
You feel more dehydrated.
Your dizziness, weakness, and tachycardia get worse.

And none of this is because you’re “not drinking enough in most cases.”

In many cases, this is a signaling error
not a hydration failure.

(Source: Disjointed, highly recommend if you like understanding the why behind symptoms.)

If this explains a lot for you, you’re probably not the only one reading it twice🩵

✨ January Special ✨
60 minute lymphatic drainage session for $77

Lymphatic drainage supports your body’s natural detox and immune systems by helping move excess fluid, inflammation, and waste out of the tissues.

After the holidays and during cold winter months, lymph flow can slow due to stress, rich foods, less movement, and lower circulation. This can show up as puffiness, fatigue, brain fog, or feeling heavy and stuck.

Unlike massage, which focuses on muscles, lymphatic work supports the system that allows your body to actually clear and reset. When lymph is moving, inflammation decreases, the nervous system settles, and healing happens more efficiently.

Many people leave feeling lighter, clearer, and deeply relaxed.

✨ Perfect for a January reset ✨

Starting January 1st, I’ll be moving out of the shared space at Toula Yoga and will be working out of my home. This is a big next step for me. It’s exciting, nerve wracking, but really aligned. I also want to be upfront that I have several dogs and cats. I’ll keep the space, especially the room I’m using, as clean and clear as I can, but animals are animals and there will be some hair, noise, and their energy moving around. If that doesn’t work for you because of allergies or comfort level, I completely understand.

I do ask that current clients don’t share my home address with anyone. If you want to refer someone, just send them to me directly and I’ll take care of everything. I still welcome and appreciate referrals so much. As I step into this new chapter, I’m reminded of why I do this work in the first place. I’m here to be a tool, a guide, a resource for you. Whether that’s continuing to work with you or helping point you toward the next person who aligns with where you’re going. I’m grateful for everyone who has trusted me with their healing. Here’s to the next era. 🤍

60 minutes of Lymphatic Drainage/Craniosacral Therapy for $77

As we head into winter and the holiday season the body and mind start to hold onto more as we move less. The colder months slow everything down and the holidays add this mix of excitement, overstimulation, heavier foods, and a lot more emotional energy floating around. Even when it is all good things, our systems can get overwhelmed fast. This is why Lymphatic Drainage and Craniosacral Therapy are important right now. These modalities can be a game changer for getting through this season.

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us. We just do not always speak the language. Some signs you might need lymphatic support are feeling puffy or swollen, low energy, headaches, skin issues, gut discomfort, brain fog, or feeling like everything inside is moving a little sluggish. With craniosacral work, your body often lets you know through tension you cannot stretch out, trouble sleeping, feeling disconnected from yourself, overwhelm, anxiety, emotional heaviness, or that deep sense of being stuck in your head.

These therapies help in the most gentle and powerful ways. Lymphatic work helps move out what your body no longer needs so you can feel lighter, clearer, and less inflamed. Craniosacral therapy calms your nervous system, helps release old tension patterns, softens the mind, and creates more space inside your body to breathe and settle.

Winter can feel so much easier when your system is regulated and supported. If you have been feeling off, tired, inflamed, overstimulated, or just not like yourself, this might be your body asking for a reset.

Over the years I’ve been incredibly grateful for the journey massage has taken me on and for the trust and support of my wonderful clients. This work has shaped me in more ways than I can count. That said, I’ve been experiencing some personal challenges with my own body, and it’s become clear that I need to take a step back from the physical demands of massage at this time. In order to honor my body and my wellbeing, I’ll be scaling back my massage practice. I’ll be continuing to see a smaller number of regular clients, but not taking on new massage clients.

As I shift directions I’m excited to open space for new clients in the following modalities:
🌿 Myofascial Lymphatic Drainage
🌿 Craniosacral Therapy
🌿 Sound Healing- Private and Group
🌿 Alternative Energy Medicine
🌿 Purium Superfoods Consultations & Guidance

💧 Why Lymphatic Drainage Helps People with Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune conditions are complex — the body mistakenly attacks its own cells, leading to chronic inflammation, pain, and fatigue. Yet, emerging science shows one key system often overlooked in autoimmune recovery: the lymphatic system — the body’s internal detox and immune transport highway.

🌿 The Lymphatic System: Your Inner Cleansing Network

The lymphatic system moves a clear fluid called lymph through a vast network of vessels and nodes. It collects toxins, metabolic waste, and inflammatory by-products from tissues — and delivers them to detox organs like the liver and kidneys for removal.

When this flow becomes sluggish due to stress, infection, trauma, or inflammation, toxins build up and immune cells become trapped in “traffic jams.” For those with autoimmune conditions, this stagnation amplifies inflammation and immune dysregulation.

⚡ How Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Helps

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic therapy that stimulates the natural movement of lymph fluid. Research shows it can:
1️⃣ Reduce inflammation: By mobilising lymph flow, excess cytokines and inflammatory mediators are cleared from tissues faster.
2️⃣ Support immune regulation: The lymphatic system houses a large part of the immune system. Improved flow enhances immune surveillance and balance.
3️⃣ Decrease pain and swelling: By reducing fluid congestion and pressure in inflamed tissues, MLD helps relieve pain, stiffness, and edema.
4️⃣ Enhance detoxification: MLD encourages the liver, kidneys, and colon to excrete accumulated waste products more efficiently.
5️⃣ Soothe the nervous system: The slow, rhythmic nature of MLD activates the parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) response, easing autoimmune flares triggered by stress.

🌸 The Gut–Lymph–Immune Connection

About 70% of the immune system lies within the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). A sluggish lymph system around the intestines can trap inflammatory molecules, contributing to “leaky gut” and ongoing immune activation. Regular lymph drainage supports intestinal lymph flow (the lacteals), which assists in nutrient absorption and immune modulation — vital for conditions like Hashimoto’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus.

🌞 Beyond Detox: Cellular Communication and Healing

Healthy lymph flow is not only about detoxing — it’s about cellular communication. Every cell relies on the lymphatic network to receive nutrients and remove waste. When flow improves, tissues oxygenate better, mitochondria function more efficiently, and overall energy levels rise.

In autoimmune disease, where cellular metabolism is impaired, MLD becomes a way to restore biological rhythm — helping the body shift from chronic inflammation into healing mode.

🌿 Integrating Lymphatic Therapy

Lymphatic Drainage is not a cure for autoimmune disease, but it is a powerful supportive therapy when combined with anti-inflammatory nutrition, proper hydration, stress reduction, and restorative movement. Many patients report reduced pain, improved sleep, and a lighter, calmer feeling after each session — because when lymph flows, healing follows.
