Dementia supported engagement can be beautifully uncomplicated. Rather than overthinking activities, let's focus on creating moments that spark joy, peace, and comfort. By being present and fully engaged, we can empower our loved ones to live in the moment, free from the need to understand or achieve. How can you bring simplicity and joy to your loved one's day today?

As someone who's experienced vulnerability firsthand, I've learned to approach unfamiliar terrain with courage and resilience. A decade ago, a head injury left me with ongoing balance issues, and living with virtigo requires careful navigation. However, I've developed strategies to overcome these challenges, including the use of walking aids and careful planning. My family's patience, encouragement, and support have been invaluable on this journey. They help me stay focused on the beauty that surrounds me, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. As I work with families affected by dementia, I'm reminded that every individual's journey is unique, and that with the right support, guidance, and tools, it's possible to find joy and hope in the midst of challenge. If you know someone who's navigating the complexities of dementia, I invite you to reach out and explore ways to find strength and beauty in this journey.

We take for granted the little moments in our life that mean so much. But it is the simple moments that trigger the greatest response. For those with dementia it's important to recognize the joys in our life. It can be as simple as the way the sun hits a window,

Fill your cup... As summer begins, take a moment to prioritize your own well-being. Recharge your mental, emotional, and physical energy, and remember that nurturing your own soul allows you to better support those around you, including loved ones experiencing dementia. Today's long, sunny day is a reminder to prioritize self-care and avoid burnout, cultivating a deeper sense of fulfillment in the love you share with others.

Tip:
Do things WITH your loved one not FOR them.
Our soul knows the work we love to do. It's called muscle memory. Keep your elders happy by maintaining their sense of value, purpose and autonomy.
Even far into the dementia experience many tasks and hobbies can be accomplished side by side. We are a society that tends to be task focused in a timely manner. We are impatient and want to just get things done. This not only takes away their independence it can actually impact their physical health. Being a companion means doing things together.

Never stop wandering into wonder.
~ Suzy Kassem
My husband and I enjoy going on walks in the woods. Sometimes we stick to the path and sometimes he wanders off seeking a more challenging route which often gives us new perspectives of the terrain. In the world of dementia care it is important to consider the activity of wandering is more of the intuitive nature to wonder.
"I wonder what that noise is?"
"I wonder where that trail goes?"
"I wonder when things should be done?"
"I wonder who is driving by?"
"I wonder how that gadget works?"
When we challenge ourselves as caregivers to wonder with our loved ones we may find ourselves wandering into beautiful moments of discovery and joy.

Behind the door of caregiving. The story coming out of New Mexico on the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife has stirred up a lot of conversation about duty of care. It seems there are reactions of judgement and criticism towards the decision a family made about how best to support or not support a loved one with Alzheimer's. As a consultant and care manager in the business of home assited living and dementia care I urge you all not to be so quick to condemn the wife, children or community. Dementia unfortunately still carries with it a stigma not only for the individual experiencing the condition but stigma can also impact the decisions of caregiving. Guilt, shame, embarrassment, isolation, fear, are often the emotions caregivers experience while making decisions. But at the end of the day it is often only them on the other side of the door living the experience. We must do better to move beyond the way we currently observe those in our community with dementia. We need to stop the whispers and the side eye and the elbow nudge. We do not know the personalities, challenges or relationships between the actor and his family or community. So we should not judge. But it also time to think better about creating a community of support for the vulnerability that exists in caregiving. Let's take this opportunity to have conversations with those in our circles of life and be not only friendly but supportive.

The road of caregiving can take you on a variety of terrains. It can be rocky, smooth, hilly, laid out in front of you or off course. No matter where you find yourself on your path, today is the day to march forth. Even if it's only for one little step.

A companion experiencing dementia told me once while baking, "My hands have memory even when my brain doesn't." She was correct! It is this memory we should discuss to determine a loved ones ability to maintain autonomy in their home. It's time to talk about the assessment process of those living with dementia. One of the more common calls I receive from families are those telling me "the Dr. says my loved one can't live home safely anymore." After a discussion of the details I discover the decision is often based on the traditional medical model of cognitive assessment. I offer families an alternative. I provide direct companionship in the environment most familiar to the individual experiencing dementia. Utilizing a the DAWN method of observational skills and tools I am able to assess and analyze skills kept and the possibilities they provide. By organizing customized engagement within their routines I discover their strengths in muscle memory, automatic thinking script, security symbol, catch phrases and sensory preferences that provide comfort and beauty. There is a comfort in familiar, security in routine and hope in care when we consider strengths. To learn more, reach out and let's talk about the gifts still present in dementia
