In 2006, St. Luke’s Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation, Community health Free Clinic, Linn County Public Health and other local leaders came together to seek out a solution to a growing issue in our community - the inability for low-income children and families to access quality healthcare. Far too often individuals were using the emergency room for health problems that had reached a critical level. Manageable conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure were causing larger, life-threatening problems.
The solution was to develop a medical home in Cedar Rapids for those in our community living in poverty. An application for a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), with an emphasis on medical education and homeless services was submitted.
Community Care was born in 2008 to meet the healthcare needs of our community and is now known as Eastern Iowa Health Center. In our first year, we treated patients in approximately 11,000 visits. Today, EIHC serves patients living in Linn, Benton, Iowa, Johnson, and Jones Counties and provides care in over 55,000 patient visits a year.
