Heather L Ash Massage, Essential Oils, and Yoga

Heather L Ash Massage, Essential Oils, and Yoga I began my journey when I stepped into my first yoga class. That inner light turned on and I knew what I wanted to do next with my life.

Offering client-based, therapeutic massage to solve musculoskeletal problems including the use of cupping therapy, deep tissue, neuromuscular and orthopedic techniques, aromatherapy, and yoga. I came home to Iowa about 8 years ago and excitedly set up my massage practice and began
Before coming home to Iowa, I lived in Boston where I discovered my passion for holistic living through yoga, meditation, and bodywork. I took my 200-hour training to be a yoga teacher with David Vendetti at South Boston Yoga. I further enhanced my studies with Josh Summers and completed 24 hours of Yin Yoga teacher training. Practicing and teaching yoga led me to a deeper curiosity about how my body works, and what I could do help others understand how theirs work in order to find freedom from pain and malfunction. Initially I completed 750 hours of massage education at Cortiva Institute in Boston under the wise and talented hands of Tom Karis, Andrew Jurdan, Todd Rivers, and Susan Coffey to name a few. While there, my education had a strong emphasis in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release, and a strong introduction to Orthopedic techniques. I chose to enhance my own education by getting 24 hours of introductory education in Shiatsu and my first level Reiki attunement. Since returning home I have begun Manual therapy training with James Waslaski and received my 24 hour certification in Cupping Therapy as well as taken many other continuing education classes in sports massage, COVID safety, essential oils and various techniques.

At 3 a.m. one night in 1988, Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole called a local studio and said he needed to record something right then and there. He pleaded with the engineer: "Please, can I come in? I have an idea."
Then, in a single take, Kamakawiwo'ole recorded the iconic version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" that would soon touch countless people across the globe. The recording, featuring just Kamakawiwo'ole's voice and ukulele, seemed to captivate everyone who heard it in a way that was utterly unforgettable.

How can I apply this to massage?
How often do I confirm, reinforce, or focus on the issues/problems our clients are having, rather than what they are doing right? I don’t necessarily mean when I am doing intake and assessing what needs to be worked on, but as I move through the massage, do I ever say things like: “your breathing is great today,” “this tissue is really healthy,” or “I can see you have built some great strength here?”

Perhaps if I can reinforce for my clients what is going well, while giving my efforts to the areas of opportunity in a client’s body and spirit, then I create an energy that empowers the body and mind to believe and act like they are not “broken,” or “a mess,” or “a lost cause,” like they so often seem to express as how they feel.

I encourage clients especially - but everyone to
read this. Be forewarned, there may be triggering descriptions in here. Though there are no descriptions of actual r**e or sexual assault, I suggest you be in a strong place when you read this.

As a massage therapist, this is an especially important topic. And I strive to have continual, reinforced, non-assumed consent from every client.

You will never make me mad or annoy me or frustrate me by asking for what you need and want or telling what you do not want or changing your mind mid-massage. Ever. That is my promise to you!

A year of isolation made me consider all the casual, unwanted touch women endure — and why it’s so hard to refuse it.
