🐾 Patient Highlight: Nixie 🐾

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of seeing Nixie at Cedar Animal Hospital when her family brought her into our emergency room. They noticed she had spent the night panting and restless, but she was not actively having contractions. Even though she previously had a smooth delivery with a prior litter, complications during labor can arise at any time.

Her family was very attentive to her behavior and did the right thing by bringing her in for an exam and radiographs. After evaluation, our veterinarian determined that surgery was the safest option to deliver Nixie’s puppies.

Swipe to see:
👉 Nixie’s maternity radiograph (9 puppies!)
👉 Her beautiful litter settled in at home
👉 Proud mama Nixie keeping watch over her tiny crew

Thanks to her family’s quick action and the fast intervention from our team here at Cedar Animal Hospital, all nine of Nixie’s puppies were delivered healthy 🩷

We’re so happy we got to be part of her story—and even happier to share this happy ending with you!

Too cold for a walk today? ❄️

Dr. Backus reminds us that enrichment is essential—especially when we’re stuck indoors. “Our pets didn’t choose their lives, we chose for them. That means it’s our responsibility to care for both their physical health and their mental happiness. Taking a little extra time to try a new trick, game, or toy can be simple, inexpensive, and incredibly meaningful, making a lasting difference in their quality of life.”

Here are a few easy indoor enrichment ideas to keep your pet happy and busy:

✅ Hide treats for a fun scavenger hunt
✅ Teach a new trick
✅ Try puzzle toys for mental stimulation

If your pet is enjoying some indoor fun, share a photo in the comments! 📸🐶🐱

🐾 Patient Highlight: Lucy 🤍

Recently, this adorable skunk named Lucy visited us at Cedar Animal Hospital for a spay procedure! From the moment she arrived, she was such a sweet and curious little lady, and our team loved caring for her.

After a successful surgery and some cozy recovery time, she’s now back home and doing great! At Cedar Animal Hospital, we’re happy to help keep all pets—big, small, and unique—healthy and thriving.

Thank you to her family for trusting us with her care! 💚

📌 In Michigan, there are specific requirements for owning a skunk. Please make sure you do your research before bringing one home.

🐾 Winter Care for Senior Pets 🐾

Cold weather can be extra challenging for older pets. Here are a few tips to keep them cozy and healthy this season:

✅ Bundle Up – Senior pets feel the chill more. Provide warm bedding and consider a sweater for outdoor walks.
✅ Gentle Exercise – Short, low-impact play keeps joints moving without strain.
✅ Watch for Slippery Surfaces – Ice can be dangerous for aging pets. Use pet-safe mats indoors and supervise outdoor time.
✅ Check for Arthritis – Cold can worsen stiffness. If you have concerns for your pet, please call to make an appointment with a veterinarian.
✅ Extra TLC – Senior pets thrive on comfort and companionship—snuggle time is the best medicine!

📞 If you notice any changes or have concerns about your senior pet’s health this winter, call us at (616) 696-1212 to schedule an appointment.
