This course takes you through what to expect in labor, coping techniques, the physiological process of labor and birth, postpartum care for mom and baby…. And everything in between!!

4 couples maximum so we stay intimate and make sure there’s enough time for questions!! Price is $300 per couple

Today we celebrate 3 years of being a collective!

Exciting news!!! our next Preparing for Birth class starts August 3rd at our Cedarburg office! We will meet every Wednesday evening in August from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm! We cover labor and birth comfort measure, the physiological process of birth, we talk about interventions, postpartum recovery for you basic breastfeeding and newborn care! This is a fun interactive childbirth education class! We are absolutely delighted to share some exciting news!! Please help us welcome Gwen Alderks to the collective! We are so honored to work with her! Gwen is a wife of 30+ years, homeschooling mom of 8 children, grandmother and certified doula and childbirth educator. She has supported over 100 couples in her 10+ years of serving as a birth doula!

Gwen specializes in providing personalized support for her doula clients by dialoguing at length with them about their individual desires and preferences to obtain the most positive and empowering birth experience possible. Helping a laboring woman’s main support person feel comfortable and confident while attending birth is a very important component to Gwen’s prenatal visits.

Gwen is a certified Spinning Babies® Parent Educator and uses these and evidence-based birth techniques with the majority of births she attends. She also captures labor and birth memories with photography, enhances the atmosphere with aromatherapy, and is skilled at placenta encapsulation for those clients that desire those extras.

Gwen is an active member of her church fellowship, enjoys walks by Lake Michigan, preparing nutritious baked goods, latte breaks, marveling at how quickly she is approaching an empty nest, and remains hopeful of pursuing her dream of opening a free-standing birth center. Some facts about nuchal cords:

🔆 Nuchal cords are incredibly common, occurring in an estimated 1 of 3 births.

🔆 They are very rarely dangerous.

🔆 Fetuses receive oxygen through the umbilical cord, not by breathing through the mouth or nose, so a cord around the neck is not cutting off their air like it would for you or me. If the cord is left in tact, the baby can still be receiving oxygen from the placenta for several minutes after birth.

🔆 Most babies with a nuchal cord have one that is very loose and it can be simply slipped over the head after birth. There is usually no indication of the nuchal cord at all.

🔆 The main way for a nuchal cord to be harmful (if the cord is healthy) is if it is wrapped multiple times and is so tight that it compresses itself, thereby decreasing blood flow inside, or if there is a true knot so tight that it does the same (rare). The cord would have to be extremely tight to cut off blood flow between the body and brain.

🔆 Nuchal cord is very difficult to identify before birth, even with ultrasound.

🔆 You do not need to have a c-section solely due to a suspected nuchal cord.

🔆 Medications given during a birth induction/augmentation can cause erratic & extra strong contractions, causing heart decelerations in the fetus. If a c-section is performed and a nuchal cord is discovered, it is frequently blamed (though the cause was more likely the induction meds). This can lead the mother to feel her baby was "saved" by the hospital staff, when they may have actually been the ones to CAUSE the issues the baby was "saved" from.

🔆 A healthy umbilical cord is filled with a gelatinous substance called Wharton's Jelly that protects the cord vessels as a fetus twists and turns its way inside the uterus.
