Many of our experiences are not stored in the brain as words.

They are stored as images, sensations, and emotional states.

When we create art, we engage emotional, sensory, and motor systems all at the same time.
This allows the brain to process experiences in the way they were originally encoded, rather
than trying to force them into words and explanations.

Sometimes, the most important step isn’t explaining what happened.

It’s giving the experience a form outside of ourselves so the brain can begin to organize it and understand it, leading to integration and regulation.

What happens when you let an experience become an image instead of a sentence?

therapy can look like in session at Blue Pines Counseling.

strengthen identity, and reconnect with yourself.

We will be sharing more about Art Therapy all month as well as art prompts you can do at

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression such as drawing, painting,
sculpting, or collage within a therapeutic relationship to support emotional healing and mental well-being.

It was formally developed in the 1940s and is now widely used by credentialed professionals
who have undergone graduate education ,training, and supervision.

Sometimes we can express through images what feels too complex, overwhelming, or hard to
put into words.

You don’t need artistic skill. The focus isn’t on making “good art”, it's about the process and
meaning behind it.

“There’s a particular kind of exhaustion many people carry right now. It’s not just physical
fatigue. It’s the feeling of being activated and depleted at the same time. You wake up tired but
alert. Your mind races, even when your body wants rest. Small stressors feel disproportionately
overwhelming. You crave quiet, yet struggle to settle…”

The vagus nerve plays a key role in activating the “rest-and-digest” response, lowering heart
rate, and calming the nervous system. By stimulating the vagus nerve, it can help you align with your body’s wisdom in a regulating and grounding way.

How we talk to ourselves matters, especially when things feel hard. Self-compassion is choosing
support instead of being hard on yourself.

What’s one small way you could offer yourself compassion this week?
