At Barefoot Perspectives, we return to what we’ve always known—

that healing begins where feet meet earth,

where stories are held without judgment,

and where silence is not emptiness,

but invitation.

Because we turned left instead of right to the mailboxes, we stumbled upon a small outdoor production, right on main street, of Jesus's birth.

Celebration Fl is likely the small town Disney wanted to live in while they built from his dreams -- a world that would be different from the one he grew up in with big porches, happy neighbors, children playing, twinkling lights, and narrow roads.

Do not be afraid to carve a path in a direction you've never been. You might find a much unexpected and most sacred night at The Inn, illuminated by the full face of our gracious moon.

Continuing: A Photographic Exploration of the Transformation of Grief and Trauma

As we strolled through Pandora at Animal Kingdom, in the dark last night, the animal noises and well lit plants felt like we had crawled into the Avatar film. So, much so, that a rustling in a bush sent me scurrying to a more brightly lit path.

I reflected then on how much Walt Disney wanted to be fully immersed in different worlds and the lives of his characters. And providing that for us too. Full immersion experiences like the landscapes of Star Wars and Pandora.

What we do for work is rarely random.

Walt Disney immersed us in new worlds, likely because he wanted to immerse himself and his children in experiences different than his childhood experiences. He believed life could be magical and so he created it that way.

It was for that reason that I first studied landscape architecture. I believed that I could experience more joy in the world by creating it so with a pallet of pens and pools and plants.

What do you believe could be different if you made it so? What do you want to change so that you experience life differently than you have in the past?

Continuing: A Photographic Exploration of the Transformation of Grief and Trauma

Disneyfication, noun. The process of changing something so that it entertains or is attractive in a safe and controlled way.

Have you asked yourself why Walt Disney's efforts, his name even, would become a controversial word in our dictionaries?

If you grew up under the shadow of familial unhappiness and poverty, working to support your family from the age of 9, might it be your vision to create magic for families?

Walt Disney succeeded at creating differently from his childhood.

How did you grow up? From that, what are those aspects of childhood you want to keep? And what do you want to change?

Barefoot Perspectives has relocated to Celebration, Florida!

Today, on the birthday of Walt Disney, we kick off these changes with an ongoing Photographic Exploration of the Transformation of Grief and Trauma.

If Walt Disney could create magic from his difficult childhood experiences, what is possible for you to create from yours?

From a child that helped to support his family from the age of 9, he did not let the ghosts of his father’s failures, and his own, keep him from trying.

And so, on his birth date, and in Celebration! Barefoot Perspectives begins this photographic journey with photos from Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning:

“Honey!” The man cried out with glee. He was a handsome man with sandy brown hair, and a FIRST TIME Disney World pin attached to his Avatar t-shirt, pointing toward R2D2 and C-3PO, “Our kids!”

His wife came around the corner, her eyes dancing in excitement, “Ohhhh! They are even cuter in person!”

Have you thought about how many of your favorite movies, favorite lines, favorite characters, and experiences exist because Walt Disney utilized the lessons, energies, and experiences of his life to create a life that not only he could love – but parts that we could love too.

WHISPERS

In the twilight of a dreamscape

the hands of the Inner-Sage
etched with stories weathered by storms and gentle rains

the tender hands of the Inner-Child
inquisitive, unscathed and soft as morning dew

weaving the tapestry of lessons learned
and dreams unbound

sacred whispers of touch
more than sound

palm to palm, the dance of
fingers intertwined

the Inner-Sage as the guide
and the Inner-Child, the explorer

the essence
of all that we are,
have been,
and could be.

Do you believe that some of your difficulties are caused by trauma?

Trauma is a deeply distressing experience that can significantly impact an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It is generally categorized into three main types: acute, chronic, and complex trauma. Each type has distinct characteristics and symptoms, which are crucial to recognize for appropriate treatment and support.

ACUTE TRAUMA
Acute trauma results from a single, unexpected, and stressful event. This type of trauma is often associated with incidents such as natural disasters, accidents, or sudden loss. The key characteristics and symptoms of acute trauma include:

Single Event: The trauma stems from one specific incident.
Immediate Reaction: Symptoms such as shock, denial, and emotional numbness often appear right after the event.

Short-Term Effects: While the impact can be severe, it is usually short-lived if addressed promptly.

Symptoms of Acute Trauma:
Intense fear or anxiety
Hypervigilance or heightened startle response
Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks of the event
Physical symptoms like headaches, nausea, or fatigue
Examples of acute trauma include a car accident, a natural disaster like an earthquake, or witnessing a violent act.

CHRONIC TRAUMA
Chronic trauma arises from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events. This type of trauma is often linked to situations such as ongoing abuse, long-term illness, or living in a war zone. The defining features and symptoms of chronic trauma are:

Repeated Exposure: The individual experiences multiple traumatic events over time.

Cumulative Impact: The effects build up gradually, leading to long-term psychological and physical issues.

Persistent Symptoms: Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain can persist for years.

Symptoms of Chronic Trauma:
Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Chronic physical ailments like headaches or gastrointestinal issues
Emotional numbness or detachment from others

Examples of chronic trauma include ongoing domestic violence, long-term bullying, or living in a conflict-ridden area.

COMPLEX TRAUMA
Complex trauma involves exposure to multiple, varied traumatic events, often of an interpersonal nature, over an extended period. This type of trauma is particularly damaging as it usually occurs during critical developmental periods, such as childhood. Key aspects and symptoms of complex trauma include:

Multiple Traumatic Events: The trauma involves different types of traumatic experiences.

Interpersonal Nature: Often involves relationships, such as abuse or neglect by caregivers.

Developmental Impact: Can severely affect emotional and psychological development, leading to issues like attachment disorders and difficulty in forming healthy relationships.

Symptoms of Complex Trauma:
Difficulty regulating emotions
Problems with self-identity and self-worth
Dissociation or feeling disconnected from reality
Difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships

Examples of complex trauma include childhood abuse and neglect, human trafficking, or repeated exposure to domestic violence.

And ask yourself the question, "Why did Maggie want me to see these two films?"

What do you believe?

I work mostly with therapists and life coaches who are struggling to stay afloat. The murmur of their voices is growing louder, "The world is burning. What am I going to do? What do I tell the people who are asking me how to hold hope? What do you tell them when they ask if things will get better? I feel so much pressure all the time!"
I don't tell them this will get better. It may not.
I don't tell them that it's not as bad as they think it is because I am not a subjective measuring stick of what is good and bad.
I don't tell them that world isn't burning because I, too, see smoke and am feeling the heat.
So, what then?
I tell them my truths, because in me being truthful with me, they can trust me too.
I tell them that they are being called to LIVE, REALLY LIVE, the life their soul is called to.
I tell them to engage in self-care.
I tell them to nestle into relationships that bring them joy, playfulness, and deep connection.
I tell them to find those things in the world that matter to them like hobbies, work, volunteering, exercise, humor, play art, and music.
I tell them to both have compassion for, and discipline firmly and lovingly, their scared inner child self. This is not the time for inner children to have control.
And from these, I tell them that they will be modeling for clients, friends, and family, a way through this muck that has integrity, authenticity, and even joy.
