Every doula has their own favorite comfort measures, so ask about theirs when interviewing a doula! Make sure you both have an idea on what you would like!

Doulas will always be your biggest cheerleader! We're here to support you through any part of your journey! Whether that be difficulty with conceiving, prenatally, during birth, or postpartum, we will be there!

Your doula should NEVER judge any of your choices. Good Doulas empower you to make your own choices, we aren't here to judge what you decide to do with your own body and baby. However, we will provide you with the necessary evidence-based reading/articles/information so you can make an informed choice!

Advocating for yourself can be difficult. Birth can be scary even if everything is going perfectly, and we all want the best for ourselves and baby. If a nurse or provider is trying to pressure you into or out of something you do/don't want to do, please make sure you stand up for yourself. Have a talk with a doula or support person beforehand on how you would like to advocate for yourself. If you'd rather have them do it for you, communicate that! Please remember that "No." Is a full sentence!

If you are uncomfortable, know you can always fire your nurses. If you're still having a hard time, ask what the risks and benefits are of what they want or don't want you to do and make an informed choice there. If they continue to do something you said no to, they did not get your informed consent. Know your rights in labor and birth and be prepared to stand up for yourself.

Your body was MADE for this. Don't underestimate yourself, stay calm, and allow your body to do what it has to get your baby to you.

Have you heard of fetal ejection reflex? If you feel safe in your birthing space, your body will push your baby out in two or three powerful contractions! Remember that 10cm doesn't always mean ready to push! By pushing when your body feels the urge, you ensure your body is ready! It reduces pushing times, which can be very exhausting! Make sure to state in your birth plan your prefer spontaneous pushing if that's something you'd like to do!

Creating a personal birth plan will prepare you for birth by allowing you to become familiar with the pros and cons of each option available to you and help you create the best experience for you and baby.

What should a birth plan look like? Once you learn about all your options and make your choices, make a shortened summary of everything you chose! A birth plan should be less than a page long. Make copies so you can make sure all of your birth team has a copy!
