“You caused harm” and “you are harmful” land very differently in the nervous system.

One invites accountability.
The other reinforces shame.

In betrayal trauma recovery, couples often get stuck in a painful cycle:
• one partner feels terrified and enraged
• the other collapses into shame and defensiveness
• both leave feeling even more unsafe
This isn’t just a communication issue.

It’s a trauma cycle.

Our newest blog explores the intersection of betrayal trauma, shame, nervous system dysregulation, and healing through a CSAT/CPTT-informed lens.

Noticing the pattern is part of the work.

It’s easy to think, “I should be past this by now,” especially when something familiar shows up again. But healing rarely means the pattern disappears overnight. More often, it looks like catching it a little sooner, pausing instead of reacting automatically, and choosing something different even in small ways.

That space between noticing and responding is where the real change starts to happen.

At Elliant Counseling Services, we approach healing from a whole-person lens, integrating insight, nervous system awareness, and practical tools for change. We also believe deeply in doing this work ourselves.

Progress isn’t perfection! It’s awareness, practice, and compassion, over and over and again.

POV: you’ve talked about it in therapy…
and somehow you’re still getting triggered.

Turns out…
healing isn’t just about understanding your patterns.

It’s also about:
• your nervous system
• your body
• the parts of you that don’t use words

You’re not doing therapy wrong.
You might just need more than talking.

At ECS, we go deeper than insight!

Your face says “present and compassionate” but inside it’s a full committee meeting.

Therapists are humans too. The work is noticing, regulating, and returning to presence.

At Elliant Counseling Services, we value using Internal Family Systems not only professionally in the therapy room, but personally in our own lives. We believe therapists doing their own inner work matters, and we would never ask our clients to go places within themselves that we are unwilling to go ourselves. The practice is noticing our parts, meeting them with compassion, and returning to grounded presence so we can show up with integrity, humility, and care.

Anger is often misunderstood.

Many people see it as something to control or avoid, but it can actually serve an important purpose. From an Internal Family Systems perspective, anger is often a protective response — one that shows up when something deeper feels unsafe or overwhelming.

Instead of pushing anger away, we can begin to understand what it is trying to protect and what it may be signaling about our needs or boundaries.

Relationship trauma doesn’t always look obvious.
It can show up as anxiety, overthinking, difficulty trusting, or feeling overwhelmed in close relationships — even when you want connection.

These responses are learned patterns, not personal flaws. With the right support, they can shift over time.

The narcissistic abuse cycle can be difficult to recognize while you’re experiencing it.

It often involves repeated patterns of intensity, confusion, and emotional shifts that can leave you questioning your perception and sense of self.

Understanding these stages can help bring clarity to experiences that may feel difficult to explain.

Boundaries are often misunderstood as rejection, conflict, or selfishness. In reality, they are a way to protect emotional well-being and create healthier relationships.

When people understand each other’s limits and needs, communication becomes clearer and resentment has less space to grow.

Spring often brings the feeling of a fresh start. But your mind and body may need time to adjust after the slower pace of winter.

Instead of pressuring yourself to suddenly do more, try focusing on small resets. Sometimes a mental reset begins simply by giving yourself permission to move at a different pace.

Emotional safety is one of the foundations of healthy relationships, but it’s often misunderstood.

It’s not created by saying the “right” thing once or offering reassurance in difficult moments.

Emotional safety doesn’t mean conflict never happens. It means that when challenges arise, there is enough trust and care in the relationship to work through them together.

Consistency, accountability, emotional responsiveness, and respect for boundaries all play a role in helping relationships feel stable and supportive.

These patterns allow people to relax their defenses, communicate more openly, and feel more secure being themselves.
