“The American workplace is in a state of flux, driven by advancements in technology, shifting economic landscapes, and evolving government policies, according to APA’s 2025 Work in America survey…

…A key takeaway from this year’s survey is that working in one’s preferred environment can have a profound impact on workers. The survey data indicates that neither in-person nor remote nor hybrid work is an inherently better way to work. Rather, workers may see psychological benefits such as higher job satisfaction, improved mental health, and a stronger sense of purpose when their individual preferences and work arrangements align. Such findings suggest a crucial shift in organizational thinking: rather than dictating a singular ‘best’ work model, the survey suggests that employers should strive for flexibility and personalization to optimize employee well-being and productivity.”

The 2025 Work in America report examines how workers perceive their employers navigating technological, economic, and political changes, as well as the impact change is having on workers’ psychological and emotional well-being.

"Feel like you can't focus? Like you'll never finish a book again? Like the only way to keep your mind and hands busy is to scroll on social media for hours?

You're far from alone. One body of decades-long research found the average person's attention span for a single screen is 47 seconds, down from 2.5 minutes in 2004. The 24/7 news cycle, uncertainty about the state of the world and countless hours of screen time don’t help, experts say...
..A shifting attention is an evolutionary feature, not a bug. Our brains are hardwired to quickly filter information and hone in on potential threats or changes in what's happening around us.

What's grabbing our attentions has changed. For our ancestors, it might have been a rustle in the bushes putting us on guard for a lurking tiger. Today, it could be a rash of breaking news alerts and phone notifications.

The COVID-19 pandemic warped many people's sense of time and increased their screen usage like never before...

Technology isn't the only thing that influences our attention, experts say, but the effects of those pinging notifications or hours scrolling through 30-second long videos can build up over time."

For educators, from the APA:

"Caring for students: Helping students who have experienced a crisis

Teachers play an important role in facilitating student learning, well-being, and growth. Help them support students through crises with this essential mental health primer. This resource helps teachers identify crisis-related behaviors in the classroom and lists practical dos and don’ts for how to effectively respond. Share this primer with the educators you know."

Teachers can help students who have experienced a crisis such as a natural disaster, loss of a close family member, or witnessing violence. "For the past couple of years, concerns about cheating at school have dominated the conversation around kids and AI. But artificial intelligence is playing a much larger role in many of their lives. AI, teens say, has become a go-to source for personal advice, emotional support, everyday decision-making and problem-solving...
..As the technology rapidly gets more sophisticated, teenagers and experts worry about AI’s potential to redefine human relationships and exacerbate crises of loneliness and youth mental health."

No question is too small when Kayla Chege, a high school student in Kansas, is using artificial intelligence. The 15-year-old asks ChatGPT for guidance on back-to-school shopping, makeup colors, low-calorie choices at Smoothie King, plus ideas for her Sweet 16 and her younger sister’s birthday par...

Again, so concerning on so many levels.

"As of April, according to an analysis by the Harvard Business Review, the number one use of AI chatbots is now therapy.

The more we learn about what that looks like in practice, the less it sounds like a good idea. That's not entirely surprising: even AI experts remain hazy on exactly how the tech actually works, top companies in the industry still struggle to control their chatbots, and a wave of reporting has found that AI is pushing vulnerable people into severe mental health crises.

So it's not shocking that when the bots are deployed in the highly sensitive domain of therapy, things often go off the rails in catastrophic fashion."

Therapy is now, per the Harvard Business Review, the number one use of AI chatbots — and that's really freaking out flesh-and-blood doctors.
